 Thought for the Month…
In a world where big things make little difference, it’s the little things that make a big difference.~ Peter Thomson

A Bit of Laughter…

A man wanted to ride a 10-speed bike from Phoenix to Flagstaff, but the mountains became too much for him. While trying to hitch a ride, a guy in a Corvette pulled over to help. The bike wouldn't fit in the car, so they tied it to the back bumper. The Corvette owner told the man that if he was going too fast, he should toot his bike horn. Everything went well for about 30 miles. Then another Corvette blew past them. Not to be outdone, the Corvette pulling the bike took off after it. A policeman radioed that he was going after two Corvettes his radar gun had clocked at 120 mph and ..."You're not going to believe this," he said, "but a guy on a 10-speed bike is honking to pass!"
A Little Less Salt Please
A study by the University of California at San Francisco shows that if everyone ate one gram less of salt each day, there would be 200,000 fewer deaths from heart disease in the next decade. sodium.jpg

 Outdoor Decorating for Cooler Weather
As colder weather quickly approaches, you might think that outdoor decorating is done until next spring. Au contraire…
In fact, there are a number of ways to decorate your landscape to welcome in the winter months. Here’s a few ideas to get you started:

Pumpkins
A perfect Thanksgiving accent, pumpkins add a bright splash of color to an otherwise dreary month and can be used in a variety of ways. From a simple mini-pumpkin centerpiece at your favorite outdoor gathering area to pumpkin luminaries along your garden path, pumpkins are a great way to decorate for holiday festivities.

Hardscape
There are so many hardscaping options and they all offer you a lasting beauty that can withstand the harsh winter elements. A gazebo for example, makes a great landscape centerpiece while a stone path or small wooden bridge adds direction and mystery to your design.

Fire Pits
Before the snow and sleet set in, you can enjoy a few more outdoor gatherings by placing an attractive fire pit next to your outdoor seating. These fire pits create a warm, inviting atmosphere for guests and also make a great focal point for your landscape.

Outdoor Rooms
The distinction between indoor and outdoor has never been more blurred. Outdoor rooms are the perfect way to extend entertaining into your yard and create an attractive and eye-catching landscape centerpiece. Outdoor rooms can range from a simple seating area with paving stones for the “floor” to a well-structured room that offers shelter from the elements. For a roof, place your seating area under a grand pergola and build a “wall” complete with barbeque pit, sink and cook-top for added definition.

Swings
A hardscape element but one that deserves mentioning separately, there is nothing more inviting on a cool day than an oversized swing complete with a warm blanket.  Place your swing where you have a good view of the rest of your landscape then curl up beneath the blanket and enjoy your view.

Conifers
Yes, conifers. Plant cedars, firs and cypresses in large pots near your patio entry way, your outdoor seating area or near the entrance to your garden. They’ll last through the winter and can be transplanted into your yard next spring. The result is some gorgeous greenery even during the coldest winter months and once transplanted, they’ll last for years to come.

If you don’t have the space for large trees in your yard, try some of the dwarf conifers such as the Pinus mugo, producing a smaller version of a classic favorite.
Calcium Fights Cancer

A report recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that men who consumed at least 1,500 mg of dietary calcium daily were 26 percent less likely to get colon or other digestive cancers than those who consumed 500 mg or less. Women who consumed 1300 mg a day were less likely to get any type of cancer.

How To Build A Wooden Fence
First decide exactly where to put it.If the fence is along your property line, discuss its outline with your neighbors. Check your survey to be sure the fence is entirely on your own property.

Determine material size: Make a string outline and measure it to calculate the length and quantity of boards you will need. Use standard 8-foot or 6-foot boards for less work sawing.

Buy treated lumber: Always use treated lumber for the posts. (Remember that about one-third of the post will be under ground, so buy an appropriate size.) The boards will last longer if they are treated, but using two coats of good paint on untreated lumber is acceptable.

Make a square corner: Set a post 6 feet from one corner and 8 feet from the other. The corner is square if the distance across the hypotenuse of this triangle is 10 feet.fence1.jpg
Setting a post in concrete: After determining post spacing, dig the post hole about six inches deeper than the desired depth and fill that space with gravel to drain moisture away.

Make the bottom end of the hole wider than the top to ensure a solid base. The post should have concrete below it and on all sides. Use a plum line to be sure that it's vertical. Brace the post until the concrete is set.
After setting, if the posts are higher than your design calls for, cut them to size before nailing the boards.

Attaching the boards: Use 3 1/2 inch nails for nailing 2x4s to posts. Use 2 1/4 inch nails to fasten 1 inch boards. (Or drive screws into place with a power screwdriver.) Use galvanized or better nails or screws.

Place the bottom board at least 6 inches above the ground to keep it away from rainwater and to make it easier to cut grass under it.Be sure that both ends of the board are the same height from the ground.

 Landscaping Question Corner…

   Q.    What’s the best way to grow caladiums?

   A.    Caladiums are a wonderful tropical plant that produces beautiful foliage. They are shade-loving plants and do well in warm climates or as year-round house plant. Caladiums love humidity and will do well in containers or as borders in a shade garden.

These tuberous rooted plants are relatively easy to grow although they are attractive to spider mites, aphids and other pests so an organic pesticide is recommended. Plants purchased before they leaf are referred to as “tubers” and should be planted in rich peat to facilitate growth. Keep the soil moist and plant the tuber with the “eyes” up, about 2 inches deep.

Caladiums are easily divided in the spring by cutting the tubers into sections. Be sure each tuber has an eye and then plant as usual. Fertilize on a monthly basis and keep caladiums away from freezing temperatures. Growth will slow down in the fall so you should adjust your watering schedule to match.
Family Vacations Can Be Fun & Inexpensive
A vacation you can pay for now is better than one that you'll pay for in the future. The trick is to decide what will be fun and still not cost a lot.

The cottage: Renting a cottage by a lake or woods is a classic solution. Many have a lodge or gathering place where kids can meet other kids. Make sure a boat is included with your cottage. If it's located 300 miles from home or less, you can travel there by car.
turnerfalls_img_camping1.jpg

Camping:
This is an great choice for families with children. It's exciting, especially if there are lots of outdoor activities available, such as fishing, hiking and swimming. If you know a spot where you can camp free of charge, the trip won't cost much at all.
Campsites charge for your stay, but usually offer planned activities and have bathrooms, showers and laundries. If you don't have camping gear, you can buy it, but remember that you can use it over and over. Most kids already have sleeping bags.

Have a free overnight visit with a relative or friend: Whether you are traveling near or far, this is a good choice. They will probably be happy to see you if you made plans in advance.

Vacation at home: Plan a different activity every day. Visit the zoo, picnic in the park, and go swimming. See an attraction in a near-by city, go to the county or state fair, and have a big barbecue for your friends and your kids' friends. (Ask guests to bring food.)

Whether you will be camping, staying at a cottage or vacationing at home, taking friends along makes the activities more fun. Kids like to bring a pal or two, and it won't cost much more than going with just your own family. A visit to a big amusement park is always exciting. It can be comparatively expensive, but if you can fit it in for one day, it's a good idea.

AgriLawn's Fall Lawn Application

AgriLawn is applying a fall pre-emergent weed control product to your lawn. This will control a wide range of winter weeds including annual bluegrass, chickweed, henbit and clover. This application along with pre-emergents we apply in the spring, form the foundation of a successful weed control program. We also treat any existing broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, thistle and spurge.

Fescue lawns receive a balanced fertilizer providing nutrients for healthy growth this fall. Fall is the best time to re-seed fescue and other cool-season grass. This will help to thicken and fill in any bare areas that appeared over the summer months. Seeds need to remain moist in order to germinate. Remember to water newly seeded areas daily until seeds have all sprouted.

Raise mowing height of common Bermuda grass to 2-2.5 inches during the fall months. Raise Hybrid Bermuda mowing height to 1-1.5 inches. The higher cutting height will promote a healthier root system and allow turf to prepare for cold weather. Maintain fescue lawns at 3—4 inches throughout the fall and winter.

At this time of year, your lawn needs approximately 1 inch of water every 7 to 10 days. It is important to have adequate soil moisture available going into the winter months. It is also a great time to have the soil tested.

Give Your Tired Lawn A Boost!

Through the years we’ve received numerous requests to apply iron for greening. Late this summer we will be offering a non-staining liquid iron application to promote exceptional greening at a time when your lawn needs it most - toward the end of a stressful summer. This is the same product used on championship golf courses. The timing of this application will ensure your lawn remains green for the remainder of the growing season. Research proves that late season greening contributes to beneficial energy storage in the root system. Along with the liquid iron we will treat stubborn late summer weeds such as spurge and nutsedge. We will also look for grubworm activity and recommend treatment during the peak season which runs from mid August through mid October. All of this is included in our new Late Season Sustainer plus Iron application.
