Frequently Asked Questions

Dear Fellow SF State Parents & Family Members,

On behalf of the Parents Council, I am pleased to be able to present you with the Spring 2012 edition of the SF State Parent & Family Program eNews. It is our hope that this newsletter helps fulfill a key goal of the Parents Council, which is to provide parents and families with timely campus updates. As a parent of a freshman, and the founding president of the SF State’s Parents Council, I encourage you to become involved in your child’s educational experience, and by reading a wide range of articles included in the eNews, you'll be able to find an opportunity to participate in the SF State experience.

Here are a few highlights of this edition:

We have included several articles for you to read more about the outstanding achievements and recognition received by SF State faculty, students, and alumni at SF State in the News, including the following articles:
  • SF State alums nominated for Academy Awards [read more]

Be an SF State & CSU Advocate: Support of Higher Education in California

As a parent of a student here at San Francisco State who has seen the power of education in your child, you need to share your story with elected officials. Your experiences illustrate the real impact of the CSU and they highlight our system’s influence on our students and their future and success.

Unfortunately, the state’s recent economic crisis has resulted in a steady divestment in the CSU – a nearly $1 billion decrease since 2007-2008. Your child and the rest of the student population of California have paid a heavy price as budget cuts have resulted in fewer classes and rising tuition fees. Despite the fact that every $1 invested in the CSU generates $5 in return for the California economy, short-sighted budget cuts have lengthened the time it takes students to graduate, forcing them and their families to take on more and more debt and threaten the dream of a California that thrives as a result of its educated workforce.

Please, take a moment and urge your legislators to reject any budget that includes a cut to the CSU, and thus shifts California’s economic burden onto the backs of college students and their families. Join the growing number of voices sharing their stories of why the CSU is important to them as Californians. Share this important message with legislators and call upon them to make the CSU a budget priority.

Tell your story!

Mandatory Advising for all First-Year Freshmen

E-mails have been sent out to all first-year freshmen directing them to complete a mandatory advising exercise in order to clear the class registration hold for Fall 2012.

There are only two ways freshmen can clear a registration hold, either by accessing and completing an online workshop and its accompanying quiz or by seeing a major advisor face-to-face, which is available only for the following majors: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Journalism, Meteorology, and Oceanography. To ensure that the registration hold for Fall 2012 is released and that there are no other issues blocking class registration, students will need to take action in March, or at the very latest by April.

First Year at SF State? Testimonial Snippets of Parent Experiences Needed

The Undergraduate Advising Center is gearing up for the upcoming season of new students during our Summer Orientation programs! A few testimonials touching on your experience during this first year as a parent/guardian of a new SF State student are needed for possible inclusion during orientations as talking points to perhaps share with our new parents. Your experiences will give them something to think about or give them a bit of encouragement. Just remember how you were at orientation - the excitement, the anxiety, and the bittersweet feeling of the new chapter that you and your student were about to begin. Please send your submission to Joseph Benjamin, assistant director of orientation at

Take a quick poll about your experience online: Have you read through GatorAid: The New Student Handbook distributed at Orientation? Let us know.
