Taking it Outside – Exercising in the Cold Weather
Don’t let the drop in temperature prompt you to pack your workout gear away with your summer clothes.

Keeping up your exercise routine in cold weather is important to up your mood and energy during the gloomy winter months. It can also bolster your immune system, and help eliminate the dreaded scramble to get in shape for swimsuit season!

Try these tips to get the most out of your cold-weather workout:

Layer it on:  dressing in layers allows you to remove or add clothing as you need it so that you stay comfortable throughout your workout.
Remember sunscreen:  it's as easy to get sunburned in winter as in summer.
Head into the wind:  you'll be less likely to get chilled on the way back if you end your workout — when you may be sweaty — with the wind at your back.
Drink plenty of fluids:  you can become just as dehydrated in the cold as in the heat.
Find a friend:  a workout buddy can often provide the motivation you need to make sure you get your workout in!

So give it a try - you will see that with the right clothing and a little planning, cold-weather exercise can be safe, effective and even fun!

Holiday Party Survival
Did you know that the average American gains 2 pounds each year?  And at least half of that weight is gained during short time period between late November and the beginning of the new year!  With your calendar filling up with holiday parties, don’t lose sight of your nutrition goals this year!

The first step to maintaining healthy holiday eating habits is to develop an eating plan before you go to the parties.  Try eating a small meal or snack before you go to prevent you from overindulging when you get to the party.  And don’t deprive yourself of your few holiday favorites, just keep your portions in check and fill up the rest of your plate with healthier fare.

Cocktails can be one of the biggest culprits in derailing our diets – be cautious of mixed drinks as the calories they provide add up more quickly than calories from beer or wine.  Also, keep in mind, alcohol can lower your resistance and cause you to eat more!

And remember, physical activity is also a good way to burn calories before you head out, and can make you feel less guilty when enjoying party favorites!
