Apples - a Heart Healthy Snack October 2008

An Apple a Day…
Did you know that there are even more reasons to celebrate the iconic fruit of the fall season?  Not only are apples a healthy snack, recent studies have shown that apples may also be good for your heart!

Researchers suggest that an apple’s antioxidant flavonoid compounds and its vitamin C both play an important role in preventing LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and inhibits inflammation.

Also, apples are rich in pectin, which is a form a soluble fiber that helps to lower cholesterol. Basically- between preventing oxidation and inflammation as well as lowering cholesterol, an apple might just be a great defense against a heart attack!

So celebrate the start of fall by enjoying one of the many varieties of apples available and reap all the heart healthy benefits of this wonder fruit!

Sweet Treats

In October, candy takes center stage but don’t let all of the available Halloween candy wreak havoc on your diet!

It is important to eat candy in moderation because calories add up quickly!  We love individually wrapped, snack-size, candy bars for portion control!

Also, some chocolate can actually provide some health benefits.  Dark chocolate contain phytochemicals that may aid in the prevention of heart disease and may decrease the effects of sugar on your teeth!  We love Chocolove Dark and Extra Dark chocolate bars!  Another good choice, try mini chocolate bars with nuts for a little extra nutritional punch!

So go ahead, indulge your sweet tooth and still keep your diet on track by making smarter choices and most importantly enjoying your sweet indulgences in moderation!
