Healthy Summer Travel Tips July 2008

Healthy Summer Travels

Healthy eating during summer travels can often feel like an impossible feat, but here are some tips to help you enjoy your summer vacation without disrupting your healthy eating routine!

Plan ahead…
To avoid overeating, aim to eat meals and snacks no more than 3 to 4 hours apart.  Pack healthy snacks such as dried or fresh fruit, nuts, PB and whole-wheat crackers and healthy snack bars.

Stay hydrated…
Drink a lot of water, even if you're not thirsty.  Low humidity and re-circulating air within a plane cabin can be dehydrating.  Because we often misread thirst for hunger, dehydration can lead to overeating!  Aim for about 8 ounces for each hour in flight.

Get moving…
Because sitting in the car or plane for a long time can make you feel lethargic and unmotivated, try to walk around and stretch your legs whenever you get a chance – in the airport, at rest stops – to get your heart rate up even if only for a few minutes!

Is Water Always Enough?

As the temperature gauge rises, remember staying hydrated is essential to maintaining energy levels and body functions.  In times of extreme heat and physical activity our bodies lose important electrolytes when we sweat, which means that plain water might not be enough to fully replenish these losses.

Specialized sports drinks may be a better option, however, look for options that provide the electrolytes and vitamins you need, without a lot of empty calories!

Waters we love:
