Calcium and Bone Health

Phosphorus, fluoride and vitamin D are all important for bone health but calcium tops the list!  However, getting the recommended 1,000 milligrams per day of calcium is a challenge for many of us. Try some of these easy tips to boost your calcium intake:
  • Make your morning oatmeal with skim milk instead of water
  • Swap out your regular orange juice and cereal with calcium-fortified options
  • Make smoothies made with skim milk, yogurt and fruit for a great breakfast or snack
  • Choose calcium-rich snacks like string cheese, pudding or yogurt.  We love Stonyfield Farm Organic yogurts!
  • Make sandwiches with calcium-fortified bread and add low-fat cheese
  • Order a latte or cappuccino with skim milk in place of black coffee. While caffeine can interfere with calcium absorption, the steamed milk will offset this effect!

Dairy provides not only calcium but also phosphorus and vitamin D. Not a dairy lover? No problem - dark leafy vegetables, white beans, almonds and broccoli are also calcium powerfoods. Also, Viactiv calcium chews are an easy and sweet way to add calcium to your diet.

Calcium absorption can also be inhibited by caffeine as noted above and phosphoric acid, which is found at high levels in sodas.  Another compelling reason to limit your soda intake!

And bone health isn’t the only reason to get your calcium - recent studies have shown that calcium appears to help prevent hypertension, kidney stones, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer and may also aid in weight management as well!

Because the signs of osteoporosis don’t show up until later in life, consuming adequate calcium and engaging in regular physical activity should be lifelong habits to keep your bones strong and healthy for many years to come!
