Summer is right around the corner... With the warmer weather comes BBQs, picnics and parties. Even if you're not diving into the chips, you still might be making choices that might have a negative impact on your waistline. Making some smart decisions can save you hundreds of calories without sacrificing some of your favorite summer treats! As we say "Small Changes, Big Impact!" 1. Frozen or fruity drinks like margaritas and pina coladas can have up to 500 calories! Better options would be wine, mixing cocktails with club soda, or even a drink on the rocks instead of the mixed diet sabotages. 2. Choose salsa over guacamole and you'll save about 9 grams of fat and 90 calories per 3 ounce serving. 3. At a BBQ choose skinless chicken breast over hamburgers and hot-dogs. Be wary of turkey burgers, if it isn't lean ground meat, it can be as high in fat as ground beef!!! 4. When looking for a sweet treat, choose sorbet over ice cream. If you still want the creaminess, try sherbet which is made with 1-2% milk fat versus the 10% of ice cream! Here are some great sweet options that we love! http://www.sharons-sorbet.com/ http://www.haagendazs.com/products/product.aspx?id=22 During the summer months, Vitamin D or the "sunshine vitamin" is abundant! In addition to obtaining Vitamin D from foods, your body actually produces Vitamin D from sunlight! 20-30 minutes of sun exposure 2-3 times a week is all you need to get adequate amounts! Vitamin D works with calcium to keep bones strong and fight bone disease. |
