Great news - Lambeth Planning Department has approved the planning application for the education centre in Windmill Gardens. The tendering process will now begin.

Jean Kerrigan, Chair of Friends of Windmill Gardens, said:

“The Friends of Windmill Gardens are delighted that planning permission has been granted to build an education centre in Windmill Gardens. This will allow us to provide improved facilities to visitors and most importantly to provide an education building for schoolchildren that visit the 200-year-old Brixton Windmill.

“Having an education building also allows us to increase our activities and support flour production at Brixton Windmill as well as providing a space for use by the local community.

“The Friends, a local charity that is wholly run by volunteers, are committed to managing the building upon its completion. We thank Lambeth Council for funding this project and hope to work in partnership with them as we continue to organise the successful programme of tours at Brixton Windmill and popular community events in Windmill Gardens.

“We also thank the architects, Squire and Partners, for their design, commitment and generous support for this project.”

Friends' volunteers shortlisted for award

And more good news - Friends of Windmill Gardens volunteers have been shortlisted for the prestigious Museums + Heritage Award for Volunteers of the Year.

The nomination was made in recognition of the supreme efforts made by our volunteers in 2016, when they organised extra events to celebrate Brixton Windmill's bicentenary year.

A group of volunteer millers started grinding flour regularly, providing extra income for our activities, and the Parks Group also raised funds through bric a brac stalls as well as getting funding to offer free weekly tai chi sessions.

The Communications Group gained excellent publicity throughout the year - Brixton Windmill appeared on ITN News, London Live and BBC Radio London, as well as featuring regularly in Time Out magazine and even in South African Airways in-flight magazine! They also greatly expanded the range of merchandise.

And of course, the campaign for a new education centre has required volunteers to spend many hours reading documents, drafting business plans and attending meetings.

As a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, the Friends could not have achieved so much without the unflagging enthusiasm and generosity of so many people giving their time and expertise. So many thanks and congratulations to all our volunteers!

The winners will be announced on 17 May - fingers crossed!

Our guest appearance at Pop Brixton on 4/5 March to promote Brixton Windmill flour and publicise our 2017 tours and events had to be postponed due to events beyond our control. However, we will now be there on the weekend of 18/19 March.

This is a great opportunity to buy flour and other merchandise, find out about our great 2017 events programme, chat to volunteers about plans for the new education centre and sign up or renew your membership.

If you're interested in helping out for a couple of hours over the weekend, please email

As you probably know, Brixton Windmill reopens for tours on 25/26 March.

To ensure that our first visitors of the year see the windmill at its best, we need a few volunteers to help air the windmill and remove some dust and cobwebs.

So if you have an hour or two to spare, come along to the windmill on Saturday 25 March at 10am. Email for more information.

The full list of events and open days is shown in our leaflet (left), available from libraries and cafes around Brixton, and also on our website.

Booking for full tours opens one month in advance and is publicised on Twitter and Facebook.
