Gainesville—First City in North America
to Adopt a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) policy
|
Under the law, passed March 1st, utilities in Gainesville are required to purchase solar energy from registered producers for $0.32 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the length of their 20 year contract. Within a day, solar producers signed up to generate 4MW of solar energy, the first-year production cap for the program. The entire state of Florida currently has only 2 MW of capacity installed. | Ontario Poised to Lead North America on RE |
On February 23, 2009 the Government of Ontario tabled Bill 150 the Green Energy Act, the first legislation in North America to give priority grid access to renewable sources of power and set fixed "feed-in tariffs" for these power sources under 20 year contracts. The Act would allow any renewable power system, from the smallest household solar system to large off shore wind farms in the Great Lakes, to connect to the grid and make a reasonable return on investment. ARE Hosts Panel on FITs at ACORE RETECH Conference

It was standing room only as over 100 people crowded into ARE’s session on feed-in tariffs at the Renewable Energy Technology--RETECH conference held Feb. 25-27 in Las Vegas. Former CIA Director Jim Woolsey was one of 7 panelists. RETECH was organized by the American Council on Renewable Energy--ACORE. Read more. |

Columbia Consulting Group Releases Report
|
From January through May of this year a team of 12 graduate students in Columbia University’s Master in Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy program have been consultants to ARE. Their mission has been to provide research support for ARE that will strengthen its ability to engage in a three-year, full scale, multi-track, educational campaign in support of REPs in North America. Legislative Updates Jan-April 09

During this time, Renewable Energy Payment legislative action has moved forward in 16 states: Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
