Africa Aid and UC San Diego Partner to Design Micro-Lending Initiative
|
| |
Africa Aid is partnering with the International Relations / Pacific Studies (IR/PS) program at UC San Diego to develop its new Micro-Lending Initiative. The University classroom-designed program will provide small loans to African men and women who would not otherwise have the available capital to break the economic shackles of poverty. The Micro-Lending Initiative will not only empower poverty-stricken Africans by giving them access to credit, but will also provide training in business development, personal finance, and basic accounting. Summer Starr, a current IR/PS student earning her Master of Pacific International Affairs, will be traveling to Ghana and Liberia with Africa Aid in July to begin assessments for the project.

The instructor for the course, Craig McIntosh, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Economics, loans his expertise from prior experience with micro-lending in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and throughout Latin America. He has also conducted research for large microfinance institutions such as FINCA. Under McIntosh's direction, are looking forward to seeing our first micro-lending program launch successfully. |

Ladeisha Bhide was first introduced to Africa Aid when a close friend bought her an Africa Aid t-shirt as a gift in January. Having lived for twelve years in Nigeria, where her parents worked at a mission school, Ladeisha wore her t-shirt in proud support of her childhood home.
Several months later, the junior at St. Olaf College in Minnesota and current President of the Karibu African Students Association saw an opportunity to make a larger impact. Through a college program called Caf-Fast, she encouraged her fellow classmates in Karibu to give up the cost of one meal in support of children who go hungry across the world. The Karibu club then set up a table outside the school cafeteria to encourage other St. Olaf students to do the same. A week later, the organization had raised $851.40 to benefit Africa Aid's programs.

Ladeisha hopes the money will help empower Africans with the nutrition and education they have a right to. She hopes to return one day as a public health officer or nurse to give back to the community she has such fond memories of.

Africa Aid Supplementary Curriculum Project (SCP) Expands |
Africa Aid's School Lunch Program (SLP) currently provides 215 children in the Buduburam Liberian Refugee Camp with nutritious meals and health education. In conjunction with our implementation partner organization, SHIFSD, the program provides underprivileged students with basic dietary provisions and knowledge of healthy lifestyle practices to increase their intellectual development in school and promote healthy lifestyle choices throughout Buduburam's larger communities. Africa Aid is now working to expand the health education curriculum by developing the Supplementary Curriculum Program (SCP) and working to broaden the target audience of African students. SCP will deliver educational modules through lunchtime lessons that engage students and educate them to share with their communities the best possible preventative measures they can take to avoid illness and disease, as well as encouraging optimal health.
