Special Catholic Schools Week Edition

From the Executive Director

Dear Friends of the Mid-Atlantic Catholic Schools Consortium,

Across the nation and our region, we pause this week to celebrate the rich traditions and commitment to service, faith formation, and academic excellence of our Catholic schools. Catholic Schools Week provides us with a special opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of our students and teachers and to increase our understanding of the contributions of our Catholic schools and their important role in the lives of our children and their families, our Church and our country.

Service is a long-standing tradition in Catholic education and a foundation of Church and social teaching. In this issue we highlight some of the many examples of service provided by our Catholic school students. In every (arch)diocese and every school we find students, teachers, administrators and families coming together to serve others in our area, across the country, and around the world. We know that these early lessons of service will form the lifetime habits of caring, compassion and volunteerism.

A difficult time for our nation has added challenges for Catholic schools, which face rapidly rising costs and declining enrollments. I continue to believe, however, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future of Catholic schools, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region where Catholic schools, parishes and dioceses are engaged in ground-breaking, collaborative efforts to reduce operating costs and enhance the learning environments. Please read this article that appeared recently in The Catholic Standard and Arlington Herald.

With gratitude for the countless sacrifices that have made today’s Catholic schools possible, I thank you for your continued support of Catholic schools.

With best wishes,

We Remember Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

As we celebrate service to others during Catholic Schools Week, we share a quote from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton who devoted her life in service to the Church. She is the foundress of the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She also opened the first American parish school and established the first American Catholic orphanage. j0434135.jpg

“Cheerfulness prepares the mind for all the noblest acts of religion: love, adoration, praise and every union with our God, and also for duties, charity, happy zeal, useful concern for our neighbor.” - Elizabeth Ann Seton
