On Monday and Tuesday, thousands of healthcare workers will converge to show our support for uniting all healthcare workers in California into a single union, and fight off SEIU’s attempts to retaliate against reformers within our union. Manhattan Beach, California, is the latest front in the battle to reform SEIU and ensure democracy within the labor movement.
We’re planning a march, rallies, and other actions on Monday. At the same time, SEIU is holding a hearing to determine the future of California’s healthcare workers. This hearing is crucial, because SEIU is pushing for an alternate proposal to split hospital and long-term care workers into separate unions. Check out www.seiuvoice.org for our live blog from the event, regular news updates, and a nightly webcast.
UHW has raised objections to the legitimacy of this hearing. We believe SEIU is using the hearing as a cover for its plan to strip 65,000 members out of UHW in retaliation for opposing sweetheart deals with employers, like the nursing home alliance.
Healthcare workers are stronger when we’re all united into a single, statewide union—not divided from each other. SEIU has created statewide healthcare unions in other states, and it’s the only proven way to lift workers out of poverty and use our combined strength to organize and win important legislative victories. So why is California different?
It’s also important that workers have a voice in determining their own future, but we fear that SEIU will try to forcibly transfer workers from UHW into another local through a rigged and undemocratic election. Any merger must be approved in a fair, local-by-local vote—not a combined or “pooled” vote that dilutes the voice of some members while favoring others.
Be sure to keep up with the latest developments at www.seiuvoice.org, where we’ll be posting blog updates, a nightly video webcast, photo galleries from the daily events, and more.
