Summer Youth Employment Program in Chester County

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) was revived this year through funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  With those funds, 139 youth were given the opportunity to participate in real work experiences and training.

Over 25 worksites representing all corners of Chester County participated in having youth work in their private businesses, public offices, and community organizations.

Youth also received work readiness training that oriented them with the job market, work etiquette, conflict resolution, and other valuable occupational knowledge.

Although SYEP is winding down and many of the youth are returning to school, the effects of the program have proven to be powerful.  Some of the youth participants have been offered permanent jobs at their SYEP worksites.  Others expressed that they've achieved greater confidence, more understanding, as well as valuable social and professional work experiences that will help them progress.

SYEP Impact

The youth participant shown below said of her work experience at Phoenixville Hospital:

"I think the SYEP program helped me realize that if I have a goal I can reach it."

The young man pictured below worked at the Coatesville Savings Bank this summer, and secured a commitment from them to be hired at the bank for next summer!

The teenager below, who worked at a produce farm in West Chester, said:

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity not only to make a little money over the summer, but also for allowing me to help people who needed the food we picked.  I learned a lot about what it means to have a real job."

Additional Quotes Illustrating SYEP Success

The SYEP supervisor from CYWA of Coatesville said:

We have kids helping their families pay bills.  These kids feel like they have something to be proud of when they can hand their parents money.  One girl took her younger brother school shopping so her mom could save money. That’s real success.

A youth participant who worked at Phoenixville Hospital said:

Through the SYEP program this year I learned that I am not the only person in the world with financial issues.  I also learned to be more social and not to be so proud all the time.  I have truly enjoyed this summer working at the hospital and going to the OIC because of all the people and new information.  Thank you to all the people who have helped save my family this summer.

We have confirmed that gains in the area of work readiness were realized, but the social and emotional increases the youth also achieved through SYEP 2009 are immeasurable.
