Halloween safe driving tips
Keep your trick-or-treaters safe this Halloween by following these safety tips:
-
Be on the lookout for kids darting on and off sidewalks especially during the peak trick-or-treating hours of 4 to 8 PM, which is when most accidents with young pedestrians and vehicles occur.
-
Drive slowly and don’t pass stopped vehicles which may be dropping off or picking up children.
-
Yield to young pedestrians. This goes without saying for pedestrians of all ages, year-round; but be especially aware on this pedestrian-focused holiday.
-
Turn off your phone. Don’t answer your cell phone or text when you drive, during Halloween or ever!
-
Let other drivers know what you’re up to. Use your turn signals and your hazard lights when you’re pulling over to drop off or pick up your kids.
-
Teach your children how to cross the street. Show them how to look both ways (left, right, left) and cross at crosswalks and corners, where drivers can see them.
-
Make it flashy. Give your kids flashlights and glow sticks, put reflective tape on their costumes and have them walk in groups for safety.
-
Consider indoor activities for younger children.
