Your Undriving News - December

An Undriver recently sent us this limerick from her blog:
"There once was a practical sailor,
Who went off to pick up some kale. Her
Pink bike was too small,
For fruits, veggies, and all,
So she shopped with her bicycle trailer!"

― Margaret Meps Shulte

Greetings, Undrivers!

Spring is definitely my favorite time of year for Undriving. I love the bonus daylight for riding my bike as I can't get enough of the spring flowers. When I'm out walking, people seem to have an extra bounce to their step as we're coming out of our winter slumber. To me Spring is also a time to get excited about new projects and adventures.
Undriving has lots o' fun endeavors planned for 2013....  The only thing missing is YOU! We are expanding our Board and are looking for Undrivers like you who are inspired about helping others get creative about getting around.  It's a fun and committed group that meets monthly.  If you're curious, email me at  Otherwise, see you in the tulips!

Thanks for Undriving,
Nikola Davidson, Board President - and the whole Undriving Team!

PS. We loved this article about how the car is going the way of the steamship and the landline... check out this long-view Undriving perspective!

Multi-Modal Trip-Planning

SFmultimodalWe love how Google Maps lets you plan your trips by transit, bike, and walking, in addition to by car (though they still call it "Driving Directions"). Wouldn't it be cool to be able to compare these modes all at once, and to each other?  Here's a tool out of Arlington, VA, that does just that.... Have a look!  Take it for a spin in your neighborhood. (example is in Chicago)

Meet Jake - Still Biking to School, Two Years Later!

bikeforjakestory "I got licensed at my middle school in 7th grade, two years ago after going to the Undriving assembly.  I biked pretty constantly in middle school [Reeves], and I only lived about a mile away.  Now in high school I bike almost every day and go a total of five miles to get to my high school!  I love it and gives me a good way to cool down after my cross-country runs. Other perks are that biking to school gives me a great chance to enjoy the outdoors and talk to my friend Z who also bikes almost every day.  Overall it’s been a great experience and I’m glad I’m doing it!
- Jake Palazzi, Olympia, WA

Thanks for Undriving, Jake!  And Big Thanks to Intercity Transit, our Founding Licensing Partner, for getting out and about to schools, workplaces, and community events with their own Undriver Licensing™ Station. They’ve licensed over 1,000 Undrivers in Thurston County so far!
