La Trobe CheerleadersLa Trobe Cheerleaders to perform at U·Ball event

Lead by Simone McSweeney (President) and James Gibbons & Emma Podbury (Coaches) the recently established team, which currently includes 21 competing members, takes its role of encouraging students and spectators to take pride in La Trobe's many sporting teams very seriously.

In addition to cheering at various La Trobe events such as basketball games, the team also take part in competitions. They won the AASCF International Showdown and are heading off to the Victorian State Championship in a couple of weeks.

The Cheerleaders will be performing live at the upcoming student U·Ball, which is presented by The Guild and the Young Alumni Group.

A group of dedicated mentors from the La Trobe University Student Career Mentoring Program recently met over breakfast at Rydges Bell City Hotel.  The mentors, including La Trobe alumni, staff and local professionals, exchanged stories about their challenging but rewarding experiences of mentoring La Trobe students. La Trobe Golden Key and the Young Alumni Group joined forces to host a Charity trivia quiz night, which raised more than $1,000 in aid of the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation, helping to raise language, literacy and numeracy standards in Australia. Read more

Downtown Lecture revealed the truth about the 'Great Australian Dream'

On Wednesday 3 June 2009 at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, the Bendigo Chapter of the La Trobe University Alumni Association presented 'Tell ‘em, they’re dreaming: Is the Great Australian Dream still relevant?' by Mr Ken Marchingo, CEO of Loddon Mallee Housing Services (LMHS). Art history short course

One of the very interesting events to do with the Salvador Dali: Liquid Desire exhibition, at the NGV, that included two lectures.  One lecture given by Dr Stewart King, Senior Lecturer, Spanish and Catalan Studies, Monash University, was titled 'Living in Interesting Times: Dali and 20th Century Spain' and the other given by Dr Frank Heckes, Honorary Research Associate in Art History, La Trobe University was titled Political Implications in Dali’s Art: From the Spanish Civil War through the Franco Years. The Art History Chapter met for lunch in the Tea Rooms at the NGV International prior to the lectures. Read more

After studying for two years at the University’s Bendigo campus and three in Bundoora before completing a year of practical training, James Callahan and Daniel Cole this week were admitted as solicitors at a formal ceremony in the Supreme Court in Melbourne. Mr Callahan and Mr Cole were students in the first intake when the law course began at the Bendigo campus in 2004.  Read more

YAG launched in Mildura

The Young Alumni Group will be launched at the Mildura campus on Friday 11 September.  Current students and staff will hold a BBQ function, with the theme of 'Wackiest Pair of Shoes'. Ten prizes including including movie vouchers and a free dinner will be awarded to winning participants. This will be the first of a number of YAG events in Mildura, with staff anticipating that they will take place four times per year.

PNG PLANE CRASH

Sad loss of two La Trobe students 

It is our sad duty to report that two of the victims of the plane crash in PNG on Tuesday 11 August were students of La Trobe University. Kelly Weire graduated as an occupational therapist in 2007 and Peter Holliday was a current MBA student. Both attended our Bendigo campus.

The whole La Trobe community deeply mourns the tragic loss of these young lives and offers condolences to their bereaved families.

Public Lecture - Creative Genius

As part of La Trobe University’s Infinity Leadership Program, participants utilise their leadership skills and knowledge to initiate a project in the community.

Emily Miller, a 2009 ILP participant, has organised a free public lecture at the NGV International as part of her community project.  Emily worked with the NGV and the Mental Health Foundation (Victoria) to create the lecture, Creative Genius.  The lecture looks at a history of mental health through the gallery’s collection and examines the work of significant artists such as Francisco Goya, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol who led innovative, creative and productive lives, while dealing with mental health issues.

2009 Rae Alexander Lecture
'The Impact Of Digital Technologies On Contemporary Printmaking'

Presented by Professor Sasha Grishin AM, FAHA - Sir William Dobell Professor of Art History and Head of Art History at Australian National University, Canberra - this lecture examines digital technology's impact and the slippages which have occurred in the aesthetics of printmaking and in the concept of the original print.

Opera In The Alps

This wonderful annual event is expected to attract 4000 people this coming year, with popular performers  Marina Prior and David Hobson accompanied by a 50 piece orchestra and 100 singers in a spectacular outdoor setting at La Trobe, Beechworth.

SPORTS CLUB NEWS

Finals Fever for Football Club

La Trobe University Football Club has had a very successful year with both the seniors and reserves winning 16 out of 18 games.  The seniors' performance has them sitting second on the ladder after the home and away season and with few injuries they are well positioned for the finals. Read more

End of Season for Hockey Club

Last weekend saw the final round of the season for the La Trobe University Hockey Club. While we’re still awaiting results, we’ve confirmed at least two of our teams through to the finals which begin next week with our men’s firsts finishing top of the ladder and moving up a division next year.
