FEATURE: MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
Dear Alumni,
We have achieved a great deal since we launched the Strategic Plan 2008 – 2012. We’ve turned an operating deficit of $7 million in 2006 into an operating surplus of $54.8 million in 2009; we’ve established important research facilities and substantially improved research funding; we’ve increased enrolments and we’re renewing our curriculum, offering new and more relevant courses to more students.
I would like to thank all staff and other supporters of the University for their considerable efforts in repositioning La Trobe.
It is imperative that we now build on our success and ensure that we continue to anticipate, adapt to and benefit from a changing operational landscape. To these ends we have reviewed and renewed the existing plan to guide our development to 2015. Four core objectives will frame everything we do as we realise our mission as outlined in the La Trobe University Act of 1964.
The new plan will be a living document which will itself evolve as the University develops over the period to 2015. It will exist as a sub-site of the University’s website (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/about/vision) and will allow you to monitor and comment on our progress as we work to achieve our objectives. More details about the renewed plan and its objectives will be presented on the new sub-site in the week of Monday 9 August.
I will launch the plan on August 18 at an event at the Melbourne campus and via video conference to our regional campuses.
Paul Johnson

A Thought Provoking Lecture in Shepparton

The Inaugural Fairley Lecture held at the Shepparton Art Gallery on July 15 bought out over 160 of friends and alumni of La Trobe University drawn by guest speaker, Mr Rupert Myer AM, and Chair of the Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation, Mr Andrew Fairley.
Guests were treated to a thought provoking talk ‘A Fountain of Ideas; Regional Australia’s Turn’ that covered a breadth of issue and concepts. Professor Paul Johnson, Vice- Chancellor, in his vote of thanks said that he found the lecture to be inspiring and rich in thought. Indeed as did the many guests given the positive comments. Next years guest speaker certainly has big shoes to fill! The University is grateful for the support of the Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation. The inaugural event has been a great success setting the tone and bench mark for the future. View transcript
2010 Australia China Alumni Awards Gala Dinner

The Australia China Alumni Association (ACAA) and CPA Australia hosted the second Australia China Alumni Awards with a Gala Awards Presentation Dinner in Shanghai on July 10.
The evening was attended by 2010 ACAA awards finalists, as well as senior corporate, government and university representatives including the Australian Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby.
Dr Raby, recipient of La Trobe University's Distinguished Alumni Award and the current Australian Ambassador to China, spoke at the ceremony of the strong links forged between Australia and China through their alumni networks.
"One important reason why the Australia-China bilateral relationship continues to be such a strong one is because of the people-to-people links alumni maintain" he said.
La Trobe University is a gold member of the ACAA. For more information on the association and upcoming ACAA events, visit the ACAA website.

CAREERS CORNER
Portfolio Careers – What do employers think? Is it a career breaker?
Increasingly, I am coming across more and more professionals of various ages who have portfolio careers, which is essentially restructuring your work differently to that of a traditional one job with the one employer. Portfolio careers are not simply for those transitioning into retirement. Often they are now for those wanting to design a more satisfying and/or financially lucrative work-life beyond the traditional full time job with the one employer. Read more

LA TROBE FOUNDATION
Scholarships and prizes assisting our students
During the last few weeks, La Trobe University has hosted a series of prize ceremonies at which our top students’ academic achievements were recognised through a series of awards, prizes and scholarships. These awards are only possible through the generous gifts of individuals, businesses and organisations. The La Trobe University Foundation would like to thank all those who have donated funds to establish and run these awards.
The benefit to our students goes way beyond the monetary value of their prize or scholarship. Receiving recognition from the University through an external benefactor boosts confidence, provides students with increased enthusiasm for study, and significantly increases their chances of success in all their future academic and career endeavours.
The La Trobe University Foundation encourages all our alumni and supporters to consider this tangible and effective way to support our students, our future, through the establishment of a La Trobe University award, scholarship, or prize. We would be happy to assist any individuals or organisations who are interested in offering support in this way. If you wish to discuss these options please contact us
