This September marks the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. La Trobe University will play host to a public forum on how this momentous event changed the world.

PROFESSOR JOHN DEWAR APPOINTED NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR
The Council of La Trobe University has announced the appointment of Professor John Dewar as Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University. Professor Dewar was educated at Oxford University in the UK and has lived in Australia for the last 16 years gathering extensive experience in the higher education sector, and has held senior positions at Griffith University and The University of Melbourne. Professor Dewar starts his position in January 2012.

High profile alum appointed Monash Professorial Fellow

La Trobe alumnus and former Australian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China Dr Geoff Raby has been appointed Vice-Chancellor's Professorial Fellow at Monash University. Geoff Raby has been involved in the international dimensions of Australian public policy for over 25 years, with a focus on Australia’s bilateral relations with China, and in advancing Australia’s trade and commercial interests in the World Trade Organisation and APEC.

2011 Australian Alumni Awards (Vietnam)

Nominations are now open for The Australian Alumni Awards (Vietnam). Supported by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, this awards program honours Vietnamese graduates from Australian education institutions whose talents and contributions have enriched Vietnam in fields such as art and culture, innovation and research, business and education. Nominations close 15 October.

We are seeking alumni to come participate in a career panel as part of the Career Development Centre’s ‘Way Ahead program’. All you have to do is give a 5 minute talk about your career journey so far and be prepared to answer some questions from the audience.
Students are really keen to learn more about the opportunities open to them once they graduate - this is a great opportunity for you to pass on your career tips and advice.

Dr Patricia Edgar AM - PhD (Education) 1974
Dr Patricia Edgar AM is a recognised world leader in children's media. She was one of six alumni honoured this month in our Alumni Awards. A pioneer in tertiary media studies in Australia she led the establishment of groundbreaking regulations for children's television and media.
"My ten years teaching at La Trobe University in the 1970’s were an exciting and torrid time...I was young enough to believe I could achieve anything with a little bit of help, but not old enough to have learnt how entrenched old university traditions were...Yet we succeeded because there were enough free thinking minds at La Trobe in those early years"

Growing Support for Student Scholarships
The Foundation is developing stronger partnerships with its business partners and community network with a view to providing scholarships for students who otherwise would not be able to participate in further study.
There are now two new scholarships to be offered on 2012, with a further 10 scholarship proposals in development.
The two new scholarships on offer for 2012 include:
The Milton Whiting Memorial Scholarships - to the value of $10,000 per year. Established in honour of Mr Milton Whiting, OAM, in recognition of his service to Mallee Family Care and his long-standing involvement with La Trobe University. The scholarship is in support of two students per year, who are undertaking the Bachelor of Human Services/Master of Social Work Program at the Mildura campus and experiencing financial hardship.
Bendigo Community Foundation – to the value of $80,000 for student participation in Bendigo, following a gift of $20,000 by Mr Richard Guy , another $20,000 by La Trobe University, which was gift matched by the Bendigo Community Foundation with another $40,000
