La Trobe’s Young Alumni Group Launched!

La Trobe University last week welcomed another bright bunch of first years into university life. But beyond O Week’s usual dizzying mix of campus tours, course information and eagerly enlisting groups, a brand new path into the University community beckoned.

Though it may have appeared as just another attraction to the mingling mass of new arrivals, the launch of the Young Alumni Group (YAG) represents a radical shift in approaching relationship building within the established university culture.

Where other campus groups cater for specific interests, YAG is targeted at all students. “Anyone can join YAG” explains YAG Team member Ruth Delagas, “provided they currently study at La Trobe, or have studied here in the last ten years. Read more

IAEI Malaysia’s hosted its first major Australian alumni event in a regional city in Malaysia – The Australian Alumni Golf Competition and Networking Dinner in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The Networking Dinner held on that same night, presented an opportunity for all Australian alumni and especially the non golfers to network. The guest of honour was the Federal Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili who is a graduate of La Trobe University. In his remark to around seventy guests at that dinner, Minister Ongkili said ‘Malaysia and Australia remain the closest allies and keeping up such networking and contacts will help continue the close bilateral ties’.

Bio Science Reunion

The La Trobe University Biological Science 1993-96 Reunion was held at the Eagle Bar on February 21st 2009. Over sixty people attended the night and monies were raised for Brain Cancer Research.

The Bio Sciencers 1993-96 group was started in late 2008 with an aim of reacquainting students from this era, planning some fun events and raising some money for worthwhile causes.

Old and sometimes embarrassing stories were told, laughs exchanged, friendships reunited, and most importantly fun was had. The most frequently asked question on the night was: 'so what are you doing with yourself now?' leading to a wide range of interesting answers. Among our number on the night were Doctors, Vets, Teachers, Accountants, Sales Reps, Occupational Therapists and of course the ever popular Friendly Neighbourhood Research Scientist. Read more
