Dear Alumni

One of the most rewarding aspects of alumni relations is experiencing the affection that so many of our alumni hold for La Trobe. If recent alumni events in China are any indication, alumni pride is alive and kicking well beyond Australian shores.

Closer to home, as the asylum seeker debate continues to polarise the nation, it is with pleasure we bring you this month's alumni profile, Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM.  Kon is a passionate advocate for some of  Australia's most marginalised people and inspires us with his commitment to social justice.

ALUMNI ACTIVITY STRENGHTENS IN CHINA

Recently a delegation of La Trobe's senior staff attended alumni celebrations in China including the 10 year anniversary of the China Health Program in Harbin (in partnership with Harbin Medical School) and the launch dinner of the Beijing chapter. 

As our largest offshore alumni group it has been great to see such pride and support for La Trobe growing in China. The Harbin celebration included the graduation of nearly 200 students from the renowned Masters of Health Administration Program. The launch dinner in Beijing included a small group of locally-based alumni keen to start a program of Beijing alumni events.

Fairley Lecture in Shepparton

La Trobe University Shepparton's annual Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation Lecture  was held on July 19.  ABC Managing Director Mark Scott addressed the crowd about ABC’s work in regional Australia and future plans beyond the digital divide. In attendance were special guests, Andrew Fairley of the Sir Andrew and Lady Fairley Foundation as well as Tim Mathieson, partner of Prime Minister Julia Gillard and former local Shepparton resident, pictured right (image courtesy of The Shepparton Advertiser).

Associate Professor Ishaq Bhatti of La Trobe University has been recognised by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) for developing Australia’s first ever Islamic banking and finance course designed according to Shariah law.

Alumnus takes top nursing honour

La Trobe University alumnus and Red Cross aid worker, Andrew Cameron, will receive one of the world’s highest nursing honours, the Florence Nightingale Medal, later this year. After completing a Bachelor of Nursing from La Trobe in 1991, Andrew became involved with the New Zealand Red Cross and for the past seven years has worked extensively in demanding surroundings.

Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM - BBSc 1994, LLB 1999

For a man not yet 40, Kon Karapanagiotidis' passion, activism and advocacy for asylum seekers is nothing short of inspiring. He is one of six alumni to be honoured this month in our 2010 Alumni Awards. This month we profile Kon's extraordinary achievements. In his own words...

"The issue of asylum seekers goes to the very heart of who we are as a nation. It is a test of our character and moral fabric as a country as to which path we choose. To date we have followed the path of fear and ignorance, the time to follow the path of justice and humanity has come."

OTARC receives major donation from its founder

Last month the founder and benefactor of the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC) at La Trobe, made a major donation in support of the cutting-edge autism research conducted at the centre.

The generous donation by Mrs Olga Tennison will ensure that OTARC continues to make important breakthroughs and developments in improving the lives of those with Autism Specific Disorders, and their families. 

Mrs Tennison’s gift follows hot on the heels of the news last month that the Centre has received a sizeable grant from the R E Ross Trust to establish an Early Diagnostic Clinic for Autism Spectrum Disorders at La Trobe University.
