Welcome to the first full edition of the Alumni e-news for 2011. Plenty has been happening throughout the La Trobe University community through the summer months, including planning for a wide range of exciting upcoming events.

In this edition we bring you the latest news from the University including the grand opening of the new Shepparton Campus, and we celebrate the news that a number of University alumni have been recognised with Australia Day honours.

TESTAMUR REPLACEMENT FEE WAIVED FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

The testamur fee will be waived for people who have lost their belongings in the recent floods.

medalLa Trobe University takes great pride in the achievements of its alumni and presents a small number of awards each year to those who have demonstrated significant personal and/or professional achievements.

The Alumni Awards fall into three categories: Distinguished Alumni Award, Young Achiever Award, and Distinguished Fellowship. Visit the Alumni Awards webpage for all relevant information on the award categories and their respective criteria.

Tourism and Hospitality Students Raise $23k for Cancer Council

Toursim studentsTwenty five La Trobe tourism and hospitality students raised an impressive $23 000 for the Cancer Council Victoria through organising a series of successful charity events.

Each team of students was given a $130 budget and required to organise and host a fundraising event in ten weeks as part of the 3rd year Tourism Venture Planning subject.

La Trobe Graduate's Documentary Nominated for Human Rights Award

 HR The film 'The Trial' written and directed by La Trobe alumna Joan Robinson, tracks the 2008 Melbourne trial of twelve Muslim men who were accused of terrorism offences. The documentary follows one of the biggest court cases in Australian history, through key defence barrister Greg Barns and the brother of the youngest accused, Omar Merhi.

The film was shortlisted for the 2010 Human Rights Television Award.

New $10 Million Shepparton Campus Officially Opened

 shep La Trobe University has delivered on its promise to expand tertiary education in the region, with the official opening of its new $10 million Shepparton Campus, which has been jointly funded by the Federal Government, the Victorian State Government and La Trobe University.

The new campus was formally launched by the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, the Honourable Chris Evans.

Located on the corner of Fryers Street and North Street, the much-anticipated new building is striking and architecturally impressive, and one of the most modern University buildings in Australia.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson, who personally led the program to establish the Campus, said he was delighted that the new Campus was complete and wanted to thank the people of Shepparton for their extraordinary support.

Vale Emeritus Professor Rhys Isaac – Memorial Service

Professor Rhys Isaac died on 7 October, 2010. He enjoyed a distinguished career in teaching and research at La Trobe University from 1971 to 1999 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 for his book, The Transformation of Virginia, 1740 – 1790. His reputation at La Trobe was matched by distinction at several American universities, notably William and Mary College and Johns Hopkins University, where he taught and wrote for substantial periods, especially after retirement. He is deeply mourned by the many students and staff who benefited from his generous advice and encouragement, before and since his retirement.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday 26 February at the Agora Theatre, Melbourne Campus.  His family, friends and former colleagues look forward to meeting those who knew Rhys.

Dell Donates Computers for Students in Need

501px-Dell_Logo.svgLifestyle Benefits Partner Dell has generously donated 19 laptop computers for students in need across the La Trobe University community.

Rosetta Le Compte, Higher Education Account Executive at Dell, says that she hopes the recipients will have some fun with their new computers. We also hope that they are used for some study, of course!

The computers will be distributed to selected recipients by the University's Equality and Diversity Centre.

Thanks to Dell for their support of our students.

2011 STUDENT CAREER MENTORING PROGRAM

Robert Paech - long standing mentorApplications are still open for alumni to volunteer in this program as career mentors. The program gives mentors an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with current students and new graduates who are just starting out on their career journey.

You will be matched with a mentee for one to one mentoring (Melbourne and Bendigo based alumni), or invited to participate in a speed mentoring and networking event. Through volunteering your time you can not only give back to your University, but also develop your own communication and leadership skills.

Melbourne Heart Family Day

Melbourne Heart Football Club is holding a Family Day at the LTU Lower playing fields on 13 Feb 2011 from 11am until 2pm. As part of the event, Melbourne Heart will play an exhibition game against Chinese team Hangzhou Nabel Greentown F.C.

Honorary Degree Ceremony and In Conversation with The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG

The Hon. Michael Kirby will receive an honorary degree from La Trobe University at a ceremony to be held on Monday 21 February 2011.

Following the ceremony, Michael Kirby will be in conversation with Professor Dennis Altman. The conversation will be filmed and available on the Ideas and Society Program events website.

La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) Commencing Construction Event

La Trobe University will commence construction on an iconic building for LIMS, funded from a contribution of the Federal Government of $64.1 million.

Federal Minister, Senator Kim Carr, will be visiting La Trobe University on 25th February 2011 to perform the ceremonial turning of the first sod for the new building before construction commences in March.

National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery

La Trobe recognised for excellence in research

La Trobe has been recognised for its research credentials in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results released on January 31. In Biochemistry and Cell Biology,  La Trobe was the only university whose research output (largely from FSTE) was rated well above world standard (scoring the maximum 5). Additionally, Biological Sciences was also rated 5 overall. Read more on the ERA National Report
