SHEPPARTON REUNION Carrington Manor was abuzz with staff and alumni on Nov 13 for the inaugural La Trobe Shepparton Alumni Reunion. Over 50 people enjoyed the grand surroundings and participated in excited discussions which included a testimony from a father and daughter – both La Trobe alumni hailing from Shepparton – who spoke warmly about the University’s support over the years. BENDIGO REUNION
On Thursday the 20th of November graduates and staff (both past and present) gathered to reminisce about their experiences at La Trobe and its antecedent institutions. They enjoyed drinks and nibbles on the new decking adjoining the Student Union Floor. It proved to be a good chance for attendees to catch up with old friends and colleagues, and for some serious networking.
The Campus Executive Director, Professor Lorraine Ling welcomed the attendees on behalf of the University and spoke of the importance of Alumni to La Trobe and of engaging with its students. She also spoke of the changing times we are in with regard to Higher Education and the possible outcomes of the forth coming Bradley Review. Read more

LAW REUNION 2008
Graduates of the School of Law celebrated the night at the 2008 Alumni Cocktail Party on 21 November 2008. The event was hosted at Wheat Restaurant and Bar in the CBD and was attended by over 130 guests, including alumni, faculty, and staff. Head of School, Prof Jianfu Chen welcomed back the law school alumni before introducing the guest speaker, Adjunct Prof Ian Dunn. Formerly the CEO of the Law Institute of Victoria, Prof Dunn currently serves as Chairperson of the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation. Read more
RAE ALEXANDER LECTURE
The Annual Rae Alexander Lecture was held at the National Gallery of Victoria on November 14th.
This year we were privileged to have, as our speaker, Carl Villis, Conservator of European Paintings before 1800 at the NGV. His address, Conserving the Renaissance: Recent Restoration and Research of Renaissance Portraits in the National Gallery of Victoria, was an exciting mix of scientific discovery, technical “know how”, detective stories and of course, art history. VGAC – Australian Alumni Awards
The Vietnamese Graduates from Australia Club (VGAC) and the Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh recently held the Alumni Awards (AAA). The newly appointed Australian Consul-General, Mr Graeme Swift, said it was an honour for him to meet and congratulate the winners of the Australia Alumni Awards at the award ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on 21 November.
Sponsored by La Trobe University, the Australian Alumni Award for Research and Science was awarded to Dr Tran Thanh Be. Mr Be is a driving force behind the sustainable agricultural development in the Mekong Delta region. Leading the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute and teaming up with Australian colleagues, Mr Be has an invaluable input into rice, fish and shrimp farming research projects while addressing arising bio- and socio-economic issues in the region. His contribution has been recognised by Vietnam Prime Minister as well as by the Minister of Education and Training. Read more |

ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES REUNION

The School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences organized an Alumni and Project Showcase event at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image Lounge on Friday 21st November 2008. Around 80 alumni who have graduated between 1967 and 2008 and staff from past and present have attended the event. The Dean for the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering Professor David Finlay welcomed the guests. The evening, which included refreshments and projects showcase from 2008, was essentially a social affair. It was an ideal occasion for past graduates to end the year and to discuss their future endeavours with their peers.

Would you like to develop your own coaching, leadership and communication skills? Are you interested in using your knowledge and experience to help guide students as they embark on their career? Become a mentor in the La Trobe Student Career Mentoring Program and you can help nurture final year students to become better informed graduates with an increased chance of securing meaningful employment at the end of their degree. Mentors are required to attend an introductory event, meet with their mentee a minimum of five times between April and October, and attend a celebration at the end of the program.

La Trobe University has taken the progressive step of creating its own Facebook page, whereby the page is maintained by the University itself. Other La Trobe groups, such as Campus Residential Groups and Clubs and Societies link their own pages to the University-run page, creating a directory of groups. There are currently 42 groups linked to the University page, some with over 500 members. Almost 2,500 users have signed up as fans of La Trobe, giving them access to the latest news. Fans can interact with each other by joining discussion groups, and by posting up comments on the Wall for others to read and respond to.

La Trobe University is introducing an exciting new pilot program in 2009 for current students aspiring towards leadership goals. The Infinity Leadership Program has attracted a number of high calibre applicants from the Bendigo and Bundoora campuses. The program gives La Trobe University students opportunities to develop their leadership skills and qualities by learning about the personal experiences of alumni who are community leaders. Read more
ODYSSEY TRAVELS
La Trobe is a member of Odyssey Travel - a non profit company providing educational travel for the over 45's. The company is made up of twenty-five member universities, colleges and partner organisations throughout Australia,New Zealand and Asia. The host organisation is the University of Wollongong. Programs are currently operating in more than forty countries and there is also an extensive in-bound program for overseas participants. As this is Odyssey's 25th anniversary, Alumni can benefit from a discount of $200 on 2008 programs.
