The Chinese ‘bubble’ will boom not bust says Ambassador Geoff Raby to La Trobe Alumni

In a fascinating speech, Australia’s Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby, thoroughly entertained 300 La Trobe Alumni and their friends at the Alumni Associations first public lecture. Ambassador Raby answered the question ‘is the Chinese bubble about the burst?’

Following the success of The Beijing Olympics, people are keenly observing the Chinese economy, and Ambassador Raby predicted that China’s economic growth will continue in the foreseeable future. He said despite the downturn, this growth will remain at 7% which will positively impact on Australian business, and even speculated that the Chinese economy may even be four times larger then it is now, forming a new economic super-power. At the end of the lecture, Dr Raby answered many questions from an eager crowd. Read more

Mildura Reunion Event

Mildura’s La Trobe University recently held reunion for past graduates, current students and staff of the University. More than 45 people attended the inaugural Mildura Alumni event enjoying the opportunity to meet with former classmates and teaching staff and to also make new contacts in the pleasant surrounds of Gallery 25 on a balmy spring evening. 

Mr Kent Farrell, Executive Director - Mildura Campus, spoke of the University's desire to maintain life-long links with our past graduates and staff, and to actively encourage the growth of the Alumni network.

Hari Prakash-Pandey

MBA 2004

La Trobe MBA graduate Hari Prakash - Pandey, 31, completed his degree via correspondence from India. He is the deputy general finance manager for Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL), which is currently specialising in the redevelopment of the slum areas in Mumbai. 

“Approximately 54% of Mumbai population is what we call ‘slum population,’ which is more than 1.1 million families,” he says. Read more

Bendigo Teachers’ College Reunion 2008

Bendigo Teachers’ College (BTC) class of 1951/52/53 held a reunion on Saturday 18 October at the Burnett Lounge on the Osborne St campus of La Trobe University in Bendigo. Sixty-five returnees attended the fantastic lunch and afternoon tea prepared by the catering team from the student residences. Indeed, there were a few queries about “home delivery”, and comments that the meals were “amazing!” Read More

Attracting tourists: movies alone won't do it

On the eve of the much-heralded launch of Baz Luhrmann's film Australia, La Trobe Head of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality, Sue Beeton, has questioned the popular wisdom that movies such as this and Crocodile Dundee encourage tourism to Australia.

 

Dr Beeton is author of a recently published book Film-Induced Tourism. 'When I hear talk about the power of a single movie to increase tourism, especially international tourism, I am concerned, particularly when the sites are in relatively remote areas, traditionally difficult for international visitors to access.'  Read more

No more four-eyes: drops may cure myopia

For up to two billion people around the world wearing glasses for myopia or short-sightedness there may be a surprisingly simple solution on the horizon – eye drops to shrink their larger than normal eyeballs, potentially correcting their vision and in severe cases preventing blindness.  Read more

Islamic banking course: a first for Australia

La Trobe University is planning to introduce the first course in Australia dedicated to Islamic banking and finance, joining a handful of universities in the West embracing this fast-growing segment of global finance.

Odyssey Travels 

La Trobe is a member of Odyssey Travel - a non profit company providing educational travel for the over 45's. The company is made up of twenty-five member universities,colleges and partner organisations throughout Australia,New Zealand and Asia. The host organisation is the University of Wollongong. Programs are currently operating in more than forty countries and there is also an extensive in-bound program for overseas participants. As this is Odyssey's 25th anniversary, Alumni can benefit from a discount of $200 on 2008 programs.

Cultural and educational tours

Egypt - Jan 2009: For the last six years, tours to Egypt for La Trobe alumni, staff, their friends and families, in conjunction with RMIT University and the Egyptian Federation of Victoria have been successfully organised. A similar tour for 2009 is now ready for booking. The tour will leave Australia on 1 January, 2009 for 20 days covering Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, the Red sea and a 4-day cruise on the Nile.  The tour costs $4690 including international (Singapore Airlines) and domestic airfares, and twin share accommodation.

Vietnam - Feb 2009: For the last five years, La Trobe alumni, staff, their friends and families, have been together to several trips to Vietnam. A 20-day tour to Vietnam (with Angkor Wat as optional extra) is now ready for booking. The tour will leave Australia on the 7th and return on the 27th of February, 2009 visiting, Ha Noi, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, Saigon, and many other places. The cost is $3850 including return international flights (Singapore Airline) from Australia, two domestic airfares, twin share in four star hotels, plus many meals.
