Day Without a Gay: GLBT People urged to call in ‘gay,’ donate time to service
On Dec. 10, the GLBT community across the nation will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love and time to a variety of causes.

GLBT people are urged to call in "gay"—not call in sick— on Wednesday, Dec. 10 and volunteer for or donate to a local charity or human rights organization. That day is also International Human Rights Day. For those who are unable to take off work, there are still opportunities to participate.

GLBT community centers along Colorado's Front Range are responding to the call by organizing food drives that day.  The GLBT Community Center in Denver, Boulder Pride in Boulder, Pikes Peak Gay & Lesbian Community Center in Colorado Springs and the Lambda Center in Fort Collins are participating.  Individuals are urged to bring in non-perishable food items and personal care items to their local community centers from 10:00am – 5:00pm on December 10th  with some Centers accepting donations as early as December 1st. All items collected will go to local food banks such as Metropolitan Community Church of the Rockies’ Food Pantry, Care & Share in Colorado Springs, The Family Center/La Familia of North Colorado and Boulder County AIDS Project.

Day Without A Gay seeks to shift the anger about injustice toward service. “Let's fight for equality by out-loving those who would deny us rights,” says the national organizers’ website.

“We've reacted to anti-gay ballot initiatives in California, Arizona Florida, and Arkansas with anger and protests. Now, it's time to show America and the world how we love and serve our communities,” said Carlos Martinez, executive director of Denver’s GLBT Community Center, an organizer of the event.

“Bring in your donation of non-perishable food to the collection center nearest you on Dec. 10 and show the world they can't stop our love,” said Aicila Lewis, Executive Director of Boulder Pride.

The event stems from the worldwide media attention surrounding efforts for gay rights generated through the Internet and blogs—organizers call it a “grassweb” effort— which led to protest rallies and actions across the U.S. in November.

“On December 10th, we’ll be demonstrating both our commitment to civil rights, and our commitment to the communities in which we live,” says Ryan Acker, Executive Director of Pikes Peak Gay & Lesbian Community Center.
