School of Education “Call Me MISTER” Program
In an effort to address the critical shortage of African-American male teachers, particularly in South Carolina’s lowest performing schools, the “Call Me MISTER” program selects students from among underserved, socio-economically disadvantaged, and educationally at-risk communities, and provides them with tuition assistance for certain approved programs of study, as well as academic, social and cultural support.

Colorado State University

First Generation Award
The First Generation Award was created to encourage first generation students with significant financial need to enroll at Colorado State University, and to promote diversity within the University’s student population. The selection process is competitive, and there are a limited number of awards available. The award amounts to a maximum of $4,000 annually, requires full-time enrollment during both the fall and spring semesters, and may be renewed. Colorado residents entering as freshmen or transfer students whose parents have not received a bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply. Open application typically runs from January to March 1 for new students admitted for the following fall semester.

The Transitions Program
The Transitions Program is designed for students who may not meet all of the admissions requirements, but due to their zeal for academic success have the potential to successfully complete college. Students begin with a five-week summer program, which includes begin their freshman seminar and English composition courses, as well as the chance to learn about the academic resources available to them at Dominican. The support continues throughout their time at Dominican with a team of faculty and peer advisors who guide the students and monitor their success.

Fairfield University

Academic Immersion Program
The Academic Immersion program is designed to assist students from a number of underrepresented populations who have been admitted to Fairfield University with their transition to college, with a particular emphasis on the academic adjustments a student must continually make during high school and the first two years of college. Select students-a combination of first-generation, low-income and racial background- are invited to participate in a four-week summer program. Students complete and English and philosophy course, earning six credits during the summer. These students are provided additional academic and personal support throughout the year.

Fordham University

John Lafarge Scholarship and Metro Grant
A scholarship in memory of Father John Lafarge assists resident students from under-represented cultural minorities who show leadership and academic competence as well as financial need. Candidates are selected by an admissions review committee, with the average annual award $7,000 for four years. The Metro Grant is a $6,000 grant awarded to freshmen commuting to Fordham from his/her permanent residence in New York City or the surrounding areas and is renewable for all four years.

Summer Institute
We know the transition to university life and the academic rigors of IIT are difficult; for over 30 years, IIT has sought to develop some of the finest and most comprehensive summer programs to help students make this transition. The Summer Institute for First-Year Students is a four-week, non-residential academic and community-building summer program for admitted IIT freshmen that positions students to thrive during their academic careers. Through workshops and group learning activities, students gain subject mastery of mathematics, chemistry and physics; explore intended academic majors through reading, writing and discussion; and develop analytical thinking and communication skills. There are also extra-curricular activities, including field trips and opportunities to build social networks and faculty connections.
