Scholarships - Show me the money!
A large part of planning for college is figuring out how to pay for it. Beyond financial aid, colleges and universities will offer you a variety of scholarships on the basis of your abilities—academic, performance, service, athletic, etc. These merit scholarships are not based on need, and do not need to be repaid.
The best advice in finding scholarships is to leave no stone unturned; colleges, businesses, membership organizations and religious groups can all be resources for college cash. Start your search now by looking through the College Access & Opportunity Guide and CSO College Center, visiting your high school counselor and asking family members if their work or organizations they belong to offer scholarships.
Do
Keep track of priority deadlines which may offer more opportunities for scholarships.
Review rules and regulations before applying, not all scholarships can be combined.
Approach your high school guidance counselor to ask for scholarship applications. They know about new scholarships available and past scholarships given to former students.
Attend your school or city’s financial aid event, and encourage your parents to attend.
Don’t
Don’t wait until the last minute, when applying for scholarships it’s never too early. By your senior year it may be too late for some scholarships. There are many you can apply for long before then – even your freshman year.
Don’t limit your options; apply for each and every opportunity you meet the qualifications for.
Don’t be intimidated by lengthy forms or multiple essays. Don’t get scammed, some so-called “scholarship search engines” make students pay to use their website while there are plenty of free scholarship search engines available that offer the same information.
