MARC U*STAR Program
The Minority Access to Research Careers – Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (MARC U*STAR) program is a federally funded effort to increase the representation of minority students in the biomedical field. Barry’s program focuses on students majoring in biology, chemistry, computer science, math, or psychology. Selected students participate in on-campus research with faculty, summer research internships, and graduate school preparation; may publish their research findings in scientific journals; and attend national and international scientific meetings. Academic scholarships and funding for research and travel are also available through the program.

Multicultural Recruitment Committee Open House for High School Juniors, which is scheduled for November 8th, includes an overview of Columbia’s academic and student life and a campus tour as well as information about admissions, financial aid and our Academic Success programs. The RSVP deadline is November 3, 2009, and early registration is highly recommended. Space is limited, and registration may close before the deadline if we are filled to capacity. EDGE Program
The Millikin EDGE program is a pre-orientation summer program that allows students to adjust to college courses and campus life in a small, supportive environment. Freshmen selected for the EDGE program complete an intensive course that introduces them to the academic rigor of a college classroom. EDGE students work on college-level reading and writing, critical thinking, class discussion and time management with the assistance of peer mentors and program staff. EDGE students also benefit from intensive advising through their freshmen year. Academic development staff consistently monitor the progress of EDGE students to support retention, graduation and success.

Diverse Students’ Leadership Conference (DSLC)
Saint Mary’s students host the Diverse Students’ Leadership Conference each year. During this three-day conference, current and former Saint Mary’s students combine energies to organize a campus-wide leadership conference that includes lectures, workshops, film presentations and panel discussions on diversity. Prospective students are invited to spend the weekend on campus and learn about the challenges and benefits of diversity across a variety of settings – academic, social, spiritual and professional.

Evergreen State offers this federally-funded program to students who meet eligibility requirements. Participants benefit from a comprehensive support system designed to increase graduation rates, including the assistance of a personal mentor. The campus hosts a number of workshops and social events for participating students.

University of North Carolina Wilmington

Support Opportunity Access & Responsibilty (SOAR)
The Support Opportunity Access & Responsibility program is a financial assistance program designed to eliminate loans for parents and reduce student debt to $4,000 or less. The program provides more than 500 in-state students with 100 percent of financial aid needed for four years. Beyond tuition assistance, SOAR encourages scholastic success through requiring beneficiaries to maintain full-time enrollment and a GPA of 2.5 or higher. To qualify, a student must be a North Carolina resident, have a combined family income of less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level, earn a 2.5 GPA each year, and provide federal tax returns and other documentation to demonstrate they meet criteria.
