Link building tips

It's no secret that there are two critically important factors in internet marketing. Getting your site right (on page factors) and link building (one of many off page factors.)

For a basic check that your on page factors are right, use the free "Keyword Density Toolat the bottom of this page. Just enter your site's web address, and it will quickly tell you what are the main key phrases that Google et al are finding on your site. You most important key phrases for your business should be at the top of the list. If not, have a word with your web developer to change your key word balance.

Why is link building so important? Because links TO your site from relevant other site, drive visitors, but also impress Google and the other search engines. If you have a lot of relevant incoming links, then Google ranks your site higher in its results. It's that simple, and so we do a lot of link building for clients to encourage good sites to link to their sites.

Link building used to done pretty much exclusively by swapping links with other sites, a so called "link exchange." However, this can be a slow and painful process, so I have written a "Link Building top 10 tips" article to help you get great quality incoming links quickly and easily.

Link building is THE most important off page activity you can do for long term traffic gains.

Twitter - internet marketing gold?

You can't have missed the buzz over Twitter - the on line short messaging service. Probably like me, you considered it to be the home of the self important, "Tweeting" about what they had for breakfast.

Then when the Mumbai terrorist attacks occurred, you saw a different side to Twitter. The fact that it pools instant messages from a massive user base, and this pool is instantly searchable, made it the the place to get the most current information about the attacks. (And also why Google is taking such an interest in it, as it has the monopoly on "instant" search.)

These same features make it useful for internet marketing. It is quite a simple process to search the huge user base for people that might be of interest to you (using a tool like Twitseeker - where you can search people's conversations for phrases that might identify them as potential customers or useful contacts) and then to "follow" them.

Most people that you follow on Twitter, will then come and have a look at your profile, and "follow" you back. So before long, you have developed a following of people that are interesting to you. In this respect, it is very similar to speed dating, but much faster!

Once you have followers, every "Tweet" you make, gets sent out to all of them. You "Tweet" interesting messages, and more people will find you and follow you. We work with a client who now has over 11,000 followers, and with that number, and an average conversion rate of 1%-2%,  when he sends out a message with an action in it, around 110-220 people take that action - It's worth thinking about!

I hope to write a longer article on Twitter soon, so keep an eye on my site.

Crunch Busting Hosting

If you want to set up new web sites, or move your hosting to a cheaper, nicer, faster and friendlier service, now is the time.

Just order any hosting package and enter code news01 to get 20% off. That means you could get a year’s web hosting for as little as £21.50!

Search engine friendly hosting is just that – specially designed hosting packages that compete head on with the big boys of hosting on price, but pack in specific search engine friendly features you won’t find at 1and1, UK2, Fast Hosts and the other mass market hosting companies. Our servers are also UK based, fast and reliable.

Please do compare the packages with your current host – I’ll happily arrange a free trial for you if you contact me.

If you require really fast hosting, for example for an ecommerce store where speed means sales, speak to us about dedicated hosting from only £480 per year.

buffalo.jpgRevolutionise your working life with a Buffalo!

It's not often a lowly piece of technology revolutionises working life, but a recent purchase of ours did just that. For most small businesses, data storage and access is a problem. You start with all your files on a PC, then realise how vulnerable this is, so buy a back up drive.

When your business expands, more than one people need access to the files, so you set up a network. Then you start working away from the office, and can't get the files on your PC. So you copy them to your laptop, and before you know it, there is a big mess with different copies of files all over the place.

I looked at this problem recently, and came up with a pretty good solution for us, that has also worked for a number of other small businesses I have recommended it to.

We simply purchased a Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo, and plugged it into our broadband router. This clever box of tricks does a number of amazing tricks for the price of only around £200:

  • 1TB (that's 1000GB) of storage (500GB if using Raid 1, see below.)
  • Raid 1 capability - this is really clever, and gives you some level of data security. The box actually contains two hard drives, that "mirror" each other. One drive can fail, and you just plug in a replacement. No data is lost.
  • Network access - anyone on your network (wired or wireless) can get at the data on the drive.
  • Security - you can limit access to individual folders by password. The box itself has strong security protection based on the long established Unix operating system.
  • Web access - This is where it gets really interesting. Access any of your files via the web when away from your office. You no longer have to keep your PC on all the time! The Buffalo and router need to be on,but they typically only use 42 watts compared with a PC's 300 watts. You can access files via a web interface or ftp.
  • Easy back up - simply plug in an external drive into one of the USB ports on the back of the Buffalo to run a full backup, or add another Buffalo to the network.
  • Print server. Plug a printer into a USB port, and you can print from anywhere on the network (wired or wireless) without your main PC being on.
  • Media streaming - as I have a home office, I have also put all my pictures, movies and music on the Buffalo, which I can stream down to the Media PC connected to the TV downstairs making it easy to look at holiday photos & videos, or listen to music.

Having a Buffalo now means that myself and the team can really work from anywhere we choose, as every single file we may need is accessible, plus with RAID 1 support, our data is more secure than being on a single drive. I highly recommend it.

Until next time,

Jeremy.
