Statement to the Hamilton County Board of Education
By the Hamilton County Council of PTAs
March 2, 2009
The Hamilton County Council of PTA realizes full well the heart wrenching decisions the school board will be forced to make when presenting the budget to the Hamilton County Commission.  The Commission, we’re sure, regrets the cuts that will be made because other support quality education for Hamilton County’s Children.

We, of course, would not object to the creation of a more efficient school budget.  But the public and politicians all need to realize that cuts in education is usually not in the best interest of children.  Budget cuts will affect our children and they always exclude innovative education opportunities.

We thank our school board for their dedicated service to our school board and for love that motivates that service.  We do request that any decision be as undisruptive to our children as possible.  These children are our first priority and they don’t get a second chance at the best education we can give them. Again, thank you to our school board and staff at central office for the task that lies ahead.

If the PTA County Council can be of any assistance to you please call on us.

Health and Safety Topic

Healthy Eating
Developing healthy eating habits can be beneficial to living a long and healthy life. We as parents need to start these habits at home. What our children become accustom to will most likely be what they continue when they are out on their own. Obesity is very high among our teens. Removing the junk food from snack machines at school and replacing them with healthy foods is only a start.  You can have meals at home as a family. This is a great way to introduce healthy eating and a great time to talk with your children at their day. Communication is always great to have with them. Children model after us so we need to be eating right to set a good example. Involve your children in planning the meals. When grocery-shopping buy fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. This way there are healthy foods for meals and snacks in the home not junk food. Try to give them well-balanced meals. Let’s make 2009 the start for a healthier life for our children and us.

Tennessee PTA Convention
If you are a PTA officer, board member, committee chairman, committee member, or a PTA member: you should plan to attend the Tennessee PTA Convention to be held at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

Why?  Well, a few years ago, I wondered why I should attend a PTA convention.  After all, I already knew everything about PTA so what could
a convention offer me.  I was wrong.

I learned so much during my first convention, met so many PTA people across the state (and even in my own county), and voted on PTA-related business and officer elections.  I have attended PTA conventions ever since and have kept on learning PTA information and kept on meeting PTA people.

Convention is a worthwhile investment in both time and money.  It is also a legitimate budget item for every PTA unit.  Can’t go to the entire convention: pre-register for one day and experience a PTA convention!

County Council Scholarship Applications

County PTA Council’s Scholarship Programs

The Hamilton County Council of PTAs sponsors two scholarships.  They are the Eula A. Johnston Scholarship and the Sandra A. Black Scholarship.

Being able to award these scholarships depends on you and your local PTA unit.  The council suggests a $25 donation for each scholarship program by each PTA local unit in Hamilton County.  Your unit’s donation will help a student pursue a career in education and will help provide a teacher with continuing education credits.  Please send your donations for these scholarships to Hamilton County Council of PTAs, Sherrie Ford, Treasurer, 3074 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

The Eula A. Johnston scholarship is for local teachers to continue studies in higher education at UTC.  The scholarship application for the Eula A. Johnston scholarship is mailed to the UTC Office of Development and judging of the applications will be conducted by the UTC School of Education.

The Sandra A. Black scholarship is for students entering into collegiate studies within the field of education.  Applications for the Sandra A. Black scholarship are sent to the Hamilton County Council of PTAs, 3074 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.  Applications may be found in the county council handbook.
