We are pleased to share with you this year's National Rebuilding Month and National Rebuilding Day success. Nearly 300 volunteers and skilled laborers from greater Boston joined together to help low-income Boston homeowners and non-profit-owned facilities. Repairs and renovations were made to eight sites in the Dorchester, Mattapan, Jamaica Plain, South Boston, Hyde Park and South End neighborhoods. The estimated value of the work was well over $100,000.
Projects this year included renovation of a home where the disabled homeowner, a single mother who has lived in her home for twelve years, was unable to make critical repairs to keep her family safe and warm. The homeowner has suffered from an accident eleven years ago when she broke her back and has since had four major surgeries. Another recipient is an elderly widow who has lived in her home, where she raised her two children, for 41 years. She was in need of significant repairs to improve her safety and security.
Some highlights of April's activities:
- Repairs were made to six homes which included: interior painting, installation of new windows; repair or installation of new exterior and interior doors; repairs of or new installations in bathrooms and kitchens; replacement or repair of siding and gutters; installation of new rear decks; lighting and plumbing repairs; and home modifications for the elderly including exterior steps, walkways, handrails and grab bars.
- Repairs including installation of new flooring and handrails, and interior painting were made to an after school facility serving young people.
- Site debris removal, landscaping and planting, and installation of two raised-bed vegetable gardens at a community center for elderly city residents and youth so they could learn to grow their own food.
None of this would have been possible without concerned community members who joined us as site sponsors and volunteers, and the local and national companies that donated supplies and services. You made a difference in the lives of those we served! Thank you.
Here's what some of our recipients said:
"My heart was filled with excitement beyond measure to learn that my home was among one of the sights that was chosen…Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for the labor of love and commitment that was performed… I thank each of them for their willingness to work, to build and do some badly needed restorative repairs… Blessings to each of you who took on your task of many great jobs beautifully done!!! This was one of three best things that ever happened to me." – Renora from Mattapan
"A big thank you to your entire team for a wonderful service day…Tenants had so many positive comments about the day and we're delighted with the paint job – it looks just great!... We are grateful to have been a part of this wonderful day of service… It is such a pleasure to work with an organization that coordinates, oversees and accomplishes an entire service event… We were very pleasured with the entire process and look forward to the opportunity to work with RTB again!" – Pine Street Inn staff member
