The CDC has just published its 2008 Lyme disease case numbers. A total of 35,198 new cases were reported in the U.S., a 77% (almost two-fold) increase from 2006. These are surveillance numbers, and by the CDC's own admission, actual cases are estimated to be 6-12 times this amount, which means Lyme disease is about ten times more prevalent than AIDS and West Nile Virus combined. Astonishingly, in this same two year period, cases tripled in Massachusetts, quadrupled in Vermont, and increased five-fold in Texas! You think it's time to start paying attention? We do, and wonder how much UNDER OUR SKIN can be credited for helping bring about awareness and proper diagnosis.

From October 4th-9th film director and photographer Andy Abrahams Wilson is offering a unique workshop at the renowned Esalen Institute on the California Coast of Big Sur. Entitled "Framing Nature: Exploring Self & Other through Photography," the workshop teaches how the camera can be a tool to connect to the environment and discover new ways of seeing and being. This is the perfect antidote to the isolation that many Lyme sufferers experience--a way to find healing through creativity and connectivity. |
