LYME CASES ALMOST DOUBLE IN TWO YEARS: AN UNDER OUR SKIN EFFECT?

Lyme_Bar-Chart_2008.jpg

The CDC has just published its 2008 Lyme disease case numbers. A total of 35,198 new cases were reported in the U.S., a 77% (almost two-fold) increase from 2006. These are surveillance numbers, and by the CDC's own admission, actual cases are estimated to be 6-12 times this amount, which means Lyme disease is about ten times more prevalent than AIDS and West Nile Virus combined

Astonishingly, in this same two year period, cases tripled in Massachusetts, quadrupled in Vermont, and increased five-fold in Texas! You think it's time to start paying attention? We do, and wonder how much UNDER OUR SKIN can be credited for helping bring about awareness and proper diagnosis.

UOS COMING TO SAN FRANCISCO: BRING THE FILM TO YOUR CITY

title_sundanceKabuki.gifUNDER OUR SKIN is having its San Francisco theatrical premier at the Sundance Kabuki Cinema on September 18th for a one week limited engagement. The filmmakers and some of the film subjects will attend opening weekend shows. Keep an eye on the San Francisco Chronicle for an upcoming feature on the film, and help spread the word. The film will also be shown on September 23-24 in San Rafael at the Rafael Theater.

As always, each ticket sold is a vote for change. We need your continued support to bring the film to more cities across the country.

FRAMING NATURE: PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AN ANTIDOTE TO FEAR

frond_bw.jpgOne unfortunate response to Lyme disease has been the reaction of fear of the natural world. People with Lyme know first-hand the tremendous suffering that a simple walk in the woods could cause. But it is the film's goal to show the beauty of nature next to the horror--that nature is healing not just dangerous. In truth, it is our disconnection from nature and the belief that it is ours to conquer and abuse that has resulted in an environment out of balance, one susceptible to resistant pathogens that go under our skin and the skin of the earth.

From October 4th-9th film director and photographer Andy Abrahams Wilson is offering a unique workshop at the renowned Esalen Institute on the California Coast of Big Sur. Entitled "Framing Nature: Exploring Self & Other through Photography," the workshop teaches how the camera can be a tool to connect to the environment and discover new ways of seeing and being. This is the perfect antidote to the isolation that many Lyme sufferers experience--a way to find healing through creativity and connectivity.
