New Deal Film Festival at the Pacific Film Archive, April 1 - 19, 2009 As it did during the last Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s stock has risen as Wall Street’s has fallen. Boldly piloting the nation through the twin calamities of economic collapse and world war, FDR was so popular that he became the gold standard by which his successors are measured. But how did Hollywood respond to Roosevelt’s New Deal?
In collaboration with the California's Living New Deal Project, the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive presents "From Riches to Rags: Hollywood and the New Deal" from April 1st to April 19th. The feature films and shorts in this series reflect the ways in which Americans and their institutions coped with the greatest economic catastrophe of the not-so-distant past. And perhaps through these films, we can reflect upon the newest of New Deals.
Times and dates vary. For scheduling and tickets, visit the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive website.

New Deal and CLNDP in the News As you probably are aware the New Deal is big news - from the cover of Time Magazine showing President Obama as FDR, to articles in the New York Times, the Auburn Journal, and countless other publications. Those of us involved in excavating the relics of the New Deal are getting far more coverage now that the economy is in dire straits and citizens are discussing goverment programs to rebuild our country's financial system and infrastructure. The CLNDP and our Project Scholar Dr. Gray Brechin have drawn much attention by the media and we are including links to these articles on our website. If you have articles about your community's New Deal projects or news of upcoming events please email us at leriksen@calhist.org - we would love to share the news on our website.

New exhibition at the California Historical Society - Hobos to Street People: Artists’ Response to Homelessness from the New Deal to the Present The California Historical Society, in collaboration with the CLNDP and California Exhibition Resources Alliance, presents the premiere showing of the traveling exhibition "Hobos to Street People: Artists’ Response to Homelessness from the New Deal to the Present." This timely exhibition features the works of more than 45 artists working over the last 75 years to document the tragedy of homelessness and the government’s role in the crisis. Through painting, printmaking, photography, and mixed media, Depression-era and contemporary artists offer glimpses of life on the street and show many similarities between the eras.
The exhibition is open through August 15, 2009, at CHS, located at 678 Mission Street in San Francisco. CHS is open Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00 noon to 4:30 pm; admission is free to this special exhibition.
