Jesse and Ryan at the North Face Masters

younggunn.jpg
Ryan Hudson,Outdoor Outreach Leadership Program Participant, stands at the podium at the North Face Masters of Snowboarding after recieving, "The North Face Young Gun Award."

Longtime Leadership Program Participants Ryan Hudson and Jesse Delgado have each spent the last two winters in the mountains of Utah working at a ski lodge and snowboarding every day with the dream of becoming professional snowboarders.  In January, they took a step toward realizing their dream. Both entered The North Face Masters of Snowboarding Competition at Snowbird Ski Resort.  The Masters is the only Big Mountain Snowboard competition in the nation and hosts some of the best riders in the world.

Jesse was featured in Snowboard magazine the day before the event.  Check out a picture of his run here:

Ryan had a fantastic day at the competition.  Below he talks about what this experience meant to him:

In January I competed in my first ever Big Mountain Snowboarding Competition called "The North Face Masters of Snowboarding.” I was competing alongside some of the biggest names in the business; Travis Rice, Rob Kingwill, Mark Carter, Ralph Backstrom, Ryland Bell, and so many more. There were a total of 76 Male athletes and I placed 17th! I was also given the "North Face Masters Young Gun Award". "The North Face Young Gun award recognizes riders under the age of 25 that demonstrate raw talent and innovation in their riding style. Young Gun award recipients embody the big mountain riding culture and are the future of the sport." I was stoked to know that I had placed high among some of the best riders in the world!
My original goal was to place top 30 and move on with my life, I would have been pleased with 28th even 30th but, to my surprise I rose way above my own bar and came out the "Young Gun". It is the first trophy I had ever won for anything in my entire life.  I wanted to cry on the podium. Crushing a goal you set for yourself is an accomplishment worth achieving.

Special thanks to The North Face, VANS and Gramicci for supporting Jesse and Ryan and making dreams happen!

Over the years, REI has been our most generous corporate partner. Their employees’ support, in addition to significant donations of cash and equipment, has been critical in helping us fulfill our mission.  We are grateful and excited to announce the award of a $20,000 grant from the REI Foundation to support our Leadership Program. “The REI Foundation is such a vital component to our business, and to be in a position to actually see the impact it makes on organizations and the people is very special,” commented Pete Citrano, REI San Diego Store Manager.
Recently, our partnership with REI has taken on a new dimension with their hiring of two of our Leadership Program participants, Juan Hererra and Angel Cadena.  “[Juan and Angel] have been a great addition to our family.  It is obvious that the skills they have developed through the Outdoor Outreach Leadership Program translate to other areas in their life judging by their professionalism and positive attitudes at REI.  Juan's positive "nothing can stop me" attitude is amazing and relates so incredibly to our customers that he is an excellent representative for our co-op.  Angel’s commitment to doing a good job and providing an exceptional experience for our patrons is truly what we strive to achieve at our store,”said Citrano, “I have volunteered for Outdoor Outreach sessions and seen firsthand the positive impact it makes on the kids, but to see the results in developing these young men in my store is truly a next-level reward.  I'm honored just to be a part of the future.”

We are honored to partner with such an amazing business with a clear commitment towards underserved youth in our community, diversity and the environment.

You Won’t Want to miss the 2nd Annual Puzzle Pursuit

A hole punch, two paper-clips, a piece of foil, and a gallon of water. Useless objects?  Not if you’re participating in Outdoor Outreach’s second annual Puzzle Pursuit. Last year, players delved into the puzzles of a mysterious Mayan artifact, but this year’s race will take teams on a frantic chase as they race to uncover the clues and find the finish line in Puzzle Pursuit: The Fugitive.

Raising money to directly benefit the hundreds of at-risk and underprivileged youth that Outdoor Outreach serves has never been so fun and so intriguing.  Part Amazing Race and part Sherlock Holmes, Puzzle Pursuit will encourage out-of-the-box thinking as a devious fugitive leaves a breadcrumb trail of clues for teams to follow.  Whether you’re a first time puzzler or a seasoned solver we know you’ll enjoy this unique event.  The question is, do you have what it takes to unravel the clues, or will the fugitive get away? The Chase Is On!

Friends of Outdoor Outreach “Meet-up” for good

The Friends of Outdoor Outreach (Friends) is a group of individuals who share what they love with the hope of creating a bigger, closer-knit, outdoor-adventure-loving community.

Friends includes volunteers, staff, instructors, friends, and future friends, who get together a few times a month to experience adventure and companionship. Whether it’s an indoor rock climbing night, a slack-lining session, a snowboard trip, a whale watch, or even just a bon-fire hang-out, the group provides an opportunity to meet amazing people, play outside and bring the Outdoor Outreach community together.

Outdoor Outreach Welcomes Two New Staff

In January, Khalisa Bolling and Tracy Joseph joined the Outdoor Outreach team as our new Director of Programs and Director of Development.  Khalisa’s involvement with OO began in 2008 when she joined the organization as a volunteer.  “I am very passionate about the mission and values of OO,” said Khalisa, “Getting to work full time to help the organization fulfill its mission is an amazing opportunity.” With a Masters of Public Health from San Diego State, Khalisa’s past work has focused in the areas of health research. Specifically, she spent the last five years as a program manager overseeing multiple federally funded grants from HUD and NIH.  Along with building a stronger infrastructure within the programming department of OO, Khalisa is also tasked with creating and implementing a comprehensive training program to ensure OO’s values and program model are present across the organization. She is ready for the challenge, “I think the result of this hard work will ensure stability for the organization and allow us to better serve the community as well as give us the capacity to grow.”

Tracy brings more than 15 years of nonprofit fundraising experience at several organizations, including Duke University, The Nature Conservancy, and Triangle Land Conservancy, a local land trust in Raleigh, NC.  She and her family recently relocated to San Diego from Durham, NC, where they lived for 17 years.   At OO, Tracy will oversee all aspects of our development program and will focus on building our individual donor effort.  She's looking forward to meeting our donors and volunteers as she settles into her new home, “When I learned about Outdoor Outreach and its work in the community, I knew I wanted to be part of this incredible organization.  For more than seven years, I worked in the land conservation movement and have a strong passion for our wild places.  I often find solace in the natural world and believe it has the power to heal and to transform lives.  I'm excited to share this passion with the donors and volunteers who make our work possible."

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to our new senior management team! You can reach them at khalisa@outdooroutreach.org and tracy@outdooroutreach.org.
