What a Year It’s Been!

As we end the year, we want to thank you for your partnership – you made it possible for families all over our community to celebrate their holidays in safer and more affordable homes.  This means they can have a few more presents for their children under the tree. More importantly, they can rest easily knowing their children are in a safe community.  We wanted to remind you of the many events that made this year special – and to thank you again for making them happen!

Winter/ Spring
Sally at the Fashion Show Kathy Beddow Collegiate challenge
We kicked off 2018 with our Women Build Fashion Show (led by Sally Brown and her rock-star team), a visit from the University of Maryland Collegiate Challenge students (who bunked in with our wonderful Faith Outreach volunteer, Beth Whitman), and our incredible, sold-out 2018 Gala (led by Nicole Neves, Meg Deal, Rita DiNapoli and Marilyn Grube). Funds raised at these events enabled us to plan for 2 homes in the construction year!

June saw the return of our summer intern, Jake Wibbens, who led an entire Youth Build this summer with the funds raised at the Gala.  High schoolers and young adults throughout the county joined us on the build site – many for their very first time.  We value the opportunity to help create young leaders in our community, and allow teens to realize they can make a difference right here and right now.  Summer also saw a team of incredible women in Richmond County lead the charge on a home to be built for a fantastic family in Hamlet.  Their seemingly endless reserve of energy and ideas created fun events such as a
bowling night, painting party and Womanless Pageant
(you read that right and it was a sight to be seen).

Blueprint breakfast RVers 30 year build
We packed just about as much as we could into the beautiful days of fall, with the Blueprint Breakfast, the dedication of 3 homes, a 30-hour build to commemorate our 30th anniversary, and the hosting of Camp Habitat (our statewide conference).  We enjoyed showing approximately 170 Habitat staff and board members from North Carolina how we do things here in the Sandhills.  Many toured our ReStore and joined us at the dedication of our Women Build home.  Both were impressive!  We also welcomed our long-time visiting RVers to the build site in Hamlet where they did the work of 20 teams in their 2 weeks with us. We are always excited to see their massive RV’s roll up  in the fall! Our latest build featured over 30 of the area's business leaders for the CEO build. Partnering with our community leaders extends our reach to the hardworking employees who need a safe,  affordable place to call home at the end of the day.

As we head into 2019, we have been thinking about how important partnership is to us here at Habitat.  We will spend some time in 2019 focusing on our special partners – from our financial supporters to our volunteers to our partner families.  We are excited to continue bringing you these stories, and invite you stop by any time if you would like to learn more about the work we are doing each day.  It’s a fascinating and inspiring place – and we look forward to seeing you here!
