Inspirational Moment The Goose story "Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in "V" formation, think about what science has learned about why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following it. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock can fly at least 71% farther than if each bird flew on its own. Perhaps people who share a common direction can get where they are going quicker and easier if they cooperate.
When a goose falls out of formation, it feels the resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of flying with the flock. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will work with others who are going the same way as we are. When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies on the point. It pays to take turns doing hard jobs for our group. The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Finally, (get this!) When a goose weakens or is wounded and falls out of formation, two geese fall out and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead, and they then set out on their own or with another formation until they catch up with the group. If we had the sense of a goose, we would stand by each other like that." ~ Author Unknown, as published on Volunteer BC

Event News from May
Adopt a Class Fieldtrip to the Museum Center - Friday, May 1 - The Spring fieldtrip with our adopted 3rd grade class at Rockdale Elementary was a great success. The kids had such a great time and so did we! Tim Gramke, Thanapat Vichitchot, and Jim and Alyson Gerwe, along with the class teacher and a parent, chaperoned the 19 kids. It was amazing to watch the kids' fascination with the exhibits and to learn new things. We were able to impart our own knowledge as well, for example sharing stories of spelunking in a real cave with real cave crickets. Thanks to Sopheap Sok and Carol Ann Kirievich for sharing with the kids about their jobs at the Museum Center. Thank you also to Amy Zimmerman who got us free children's museum tickets and to Sopheap Sok for reserving a private dining room for us. The kids were so impressed and grateful to have their own private dining room. Finally, thanks to Jim Gerwe who coordinated this event so perfectly!
Lunch n Learn: Building a Leadership Legacy - Monday, May 4 - presented by Diane Ness "Leaders who leave a lasting legacy understand the necessity of developing future leaders so that they make an ultimate contribution to the organization." In this fun and interactive session Diane led us in a discussion about the best way to identify and develop future leaders in the youth in the community.
Freestore Foodbank - Tuesday, May 5 We helped sort through the last of the Christmas donations that the Freestore received, so that the items can then be packed and sent out to the food pantries in the 17 counties that the Freestore supports. We had nine club members and four guests put in nearly 30 hours of service. For the Freestore, that meant that much more food to give out to the communities in need.
Monthly Planning Meeting - Monday, May 11 - At this meeting, we discussed: Club Election Results, Kiwanis International News, Committee Reports (including: Fundraising, Service, Sponsored Leadership Programs and Membership), Lunch Meeting Frequency Discussion - Read the minutes
St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen - Wednesday, May 13 - This month, Kiwanis members Bill Swanson, Amy Zimmerman and Craig Bailey, as well as special guest, Judy, served dinner to those in need and helped with cleanup. It always is a rewarding experience. "St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen has been feeding the hungry in Over-the-Rhine since 1980. The Soup Kitchen serves more than 200 dinners each Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon year round. The soup kitchen serves any and all who come to our door. Most folks do not like to depend on free meals. But the fact is, there are many men, women and children in our neighborhood who would go hungry if we were not here to help." Read more about St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen
Club Lunch Meeting - Monday, May 18 - Members and guests got together to share their Kiwanis experience, learn about upcoming projects and to enjoy the chance to reconnect with friends.
Key Leader Weekend - Friday, May 15 - Sunday, May 17- Four of our members, Brian Yacucci, Amy Zimmerman, Cyndee Crim and Rebecca Hansen, chaperoned the Key Leader event. Key Leader is a leadership retreat for students in grades 8-12. It is a life changing experience that teaches the youth what it means to be a youth leader in three different communities: the local community; the state or national community; and the global community. If you're interested in seeing first hand the power of training youth to be leaders, you should contact Brian Yacucci about chaperoning the event in the fall. It is amazing to watch the transformation of the students over the course of the weekend.
Terri Murdoch Golf Outing - Monday, May 18- The annual fundraiser for Division 6 was a great success. The format was 18 hole, 4-person scramble, with a 12 Noon shotgun start. Cost was $85.00 per golfer, which included 18 holes, cart, lunch, dinner and unlimited beverages. (beer, soft drinks, water). It was absolutely a wonderful day! Nearly 80 golfers participated in the absolutely gorgeous weather at Hidden Valley Golf Course! Candidate for Kiwanis International Vice-President, Alan Penn, even scored a hole in 1!!! Amazing! His daughter and her friend even were so kind as to drive drinks around the course for everyone! Thanks to Amy Zimmerman and her mom Sandy for supporting the division!
Division 6 Meeting - Wednesday, May 20 - The Division 6 (Cincinnati West) Kiwanis clubs met to socialize and to learn about Kiwanis events and news from around Cincinnati, Ohio and Kiwanis International. The meeting was held in the Twin Towers Gulden Room. The night's guest speaker was Michael Flannery. That night, Eileen Yeoh, Rebecca Hansen and Craig Bailey were officially inducted as Cincinnati Kiwanis members!
Ronald McDonald Service Project - Monday, May 25 - While some of us were spending time with friends or family, a dedicated few spent their Memorial Day serving others. Amy Zimmerman and her family, Rebecca Hansen, Eileen Yeoh, and Craig Bailey, cooked and served dinner for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks guys for your devotion!

An Interview with Alyson Gerwe Each month we feature one of our club members so our readers can get to know the people who make up our club. Enjoy! This month’s featured member is Alyson Gerwe, current club secretary and incoming club president. Alyson first heard about Kiwanis when she was in high school. She joined Key Club in her sophomore year (1997) and was active throughout high school. When she graduated and was ready for college, she knew that she wanted to continue the fun and the service in college too. The University of Cincinnati DAAP program set her up with a student mentor, Melinda Binder, who just happened to be a member of Circle K.
Alyson believes it was fate. Through Circle K, she made some of her best friends from college (many of whom are in Kiwanis!) and her best memories. She also helped to change the world (at least the little part of our world in Cincinnati) and developed her leadership, marketing and event planning skills.
Circle K was a way to give back to her community, but she has gotten way more out of the Kiwanis family than she ever could have asked for. Not only did she gain friends, confidence, and skills, but she gained a husband. Jim and Alyson met through Circle K, dated and eventually married in May 2005 after Alyson graduated from UC.
After the positive and addicting experience of Circle K, there was no turning back. The next step was definitely Kiwanis. How could she leave behind a piece of her life that big? After moving to Alpharetta, GA in 2006, Jim and Alyson joined the local club there, making many dear friends and helping that community. When they moved back to Cincinnati in 2007, with so many of her Circle K friends joining the Cincinnati club, there was no other club they would rather have joined.
Alyson's favorite project is the Tom Geiger Guest House playroom project. In her spare time, Alyson loves to paint and do crafts. So the mural project in the playroom paired with the fact that it helps children who otherwise would not have a safe place to play, has quickly become her favorite.
"I am so proud of all the good we've done for the residents at Tom Geiger Guest House. I know how frustrating it can feel not having a safe place for children to play and how necessary it is for mothers to have time to themselves. The Kiwanis Playroom provides both."
Alyson grew up in a town 30 minutes east of Cincinnati, called Eastgate. She graduated from Glen Este High School in 1999 and then attended college at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning studying architecture. After about a year and a half, Alyson realized her heart just wasn't in it, so she switched majors to Information Engineering Technology through the UC College of Applied Science. Through design, Alyson wanted to help people achieve their dreams.
After realizing that her husband's job was to relocate fairly often and that she was pregnant with her first child (Ava, now 3 years old), she started her own website design and development business. After four years, Alyson still loves freelancing and consulting for non-profits, small businesses, start-ups and universities. It's the satisfaction of making a real difference in promoting their organization through their web presence that keeps her motivated.
For fun, Alyson loves to go on adventures. Sometimes the adventure is driving to new places in the city or traveling to different countries (England, Scotland, Mexico, El Salvador). She used to go on a spelunking trip every year with her dad down to a cave near Lexington, KY, which she wants to try to do again this year. Whatever she does, Alyson tries to live life to the fullest. As Alyson says, "Life is too short to be bored."

Kiwanis International News 94th Annual International Convention in Nashville, TN In late June (24-27), Kiwanians from around the world will gather to vote on candidates for International offices and to vote on proposed amendments to the Kiwanis International Bylaws. The convention is a chance to help direct the future of Kiwanis International, to celebrate our successes and progress with fellow Kiwanians, to meet and learn from Kiwanians from around the world, to reinvigorate your Kiwanis passion, and to learn ideas to help our club improve. If you've never been, it is an amazing experience and one you won't want to miss!
At our June board meeting, we will discuss these amendments and the candidates. While it may not seem like these changes at the International level have much of an effect on our local club, it does have a major role in that the Kiwanis International Bylaws are a part of club's our governing rules. And International officers, while not having an immediate effect on our club, do have a major part in setting the direction of Kiwanis International, which affects us all.

Did you know? The third Sunday in June is America's special day to celebrate our fathers. Here are some of the facts about our country's dads that you may not have known:
Did you know that the concept of Father's Day was first proposed in 1909 by Washingtonian native Mrs. John B. Dodd? Her inspiration for the holiday was to honor her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran and single dad, widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child.
Did you know that Mrs. Dodd's vision did not become reality until 63 years later? In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Did you know that Americans aren't the only ones to celebrate their dads? In the United States and 52 other countries around the world, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. The first Sunday in June is when Lithuanian dads are honored; and on the second Sunday, dads in Austria and Belgium have their special day.
