Inspirational Moment "All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work. Work is not a curse; it is the prerogative of intelligence, the only means to manhood and the measure of civilization." ~John Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933)

Kiwanis International World Service Medal Recipient 2009 "Kiwanis International has named Colonel Donald Gray Heppner Jr., M.D. as its 2009 World Service Medal recipient. Heppner, deputy commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), was honored for his critical role in the development of a promising vaccine against malaria, one of the world’s most devastating diseases of children. The Kiwanis World Service Medal, established in 1985, recognizes individuals who devote a significant part of their lives to meeting the needs of others.
“The malaria death toll in Africa is staggering, the equivalent of seven 747 airliners full of children crashing into Mount Kilimanjaro every day,” said Don Canady, Kiwanis International president. “Worldwide some 500 million children and adults are sickened with malaria every year. We eliminated malaria in the United States 50 years ago, so our children are no longer threatened. Now is the time to eliminate malaria everywhere. The children of the world deserve action.”
Action is what Heppner has been taking since 1990, when he joined the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research’s (WRAIR) Malaria Vaccine Development Program. Heppner was both humbled and excited to work at an institute that developed vaccines to protect against deadly tropical diseases such as Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis A, dengue and diarrhea.
“Malaria kills 1 in 5 children born in Sub-Saharan Africa,” states Heppner. “Many children who survive severe malaria suffer life-long learning disabilities. The costs are borne by grieving mothers and fathers, their families and communities.” For these reasons, Heppner and others have devoted their careers to developing a vaccine to prevent malaria..."

As of April 2009, Power Packs are being distributed weekly to approximately 1490 children in 34 locations in Kenton and Campbell County, KY and Hamilton and Pike Counties, OH." It’s been said, “A hungry child can’t learn and an uneducated adult can’t earn." Since at least 10% of kids participating in the national free or reduced-cost breakfast and school lunch program face food insecurity at home, it "becomes glaringly evident why programs like the Power Pack Program is essential in combating childhood hunger." An Interview with Rebecca Hansen Each month we feature one of our club members so our readers can get to know the people who make up our club. Enjoy! This month’s featured member is Rebecca Hansen, a new club member. Rebecca was a member of Key Club, so the natural progression would be to join Kiwanis as an adult. She had been orbiting the Kiwanis for a few years, mostly due to Kelly (Krupa) Flick. Slowly, but surely, she was persuaded to finally make it official. So, in 2009, she finally became a member. She said she likes to "let it percolate for a few years" and doesn’t make quick decisions. It may have taken her a while to become a member, but has jumped right into the service projects.
Rebecca enjoys the Ronald McDonald House service project, probably due to her love of cooking. Even with just becoming a member, Rebecca has already shown her leadership skills with taking charge of one of the dinners at RMH. She loves to cook and always brings scrumptious desserts. She puts a significant amount of time in each one she brings to share.
Preparing desserts are Rebecca’s passion. Most of the dishes she brings to any Kiwanis event are from a new recipe. However, as more people pay her for cakes, she is force feeding friends a little less. But when in doubt - every occasion calls for cake. Prior to coming to the Cincinnati area, via Blue Ash, Rebecca spent the first half of her childhood in a Chicago suburb. She lived in the All-American brick house at the end of a cul-de-sac with a backyard. Her parents still live there. Rebecca now lives in a 100+ year old house in Pleasant Ridge, which is always a challenge. Luckily she loves to garden and do home repairs. Recently, one too many moths have met their doom at the ceiling fan...perhaps it is time for her to install window screens (on more than just the one window). If you show up at the wrong time, she will hand you either a shovel or a paint brush. She also tends to try to limit the amount of laundry while working around the house. Paint doesn't come out of clothes easily....for more details on this, you will need to ask her!!
One surprising fact is that she has a secret crush…on Kermit the Frog!

Kiwanis International News RECAP: 94th Annual International Convention Brian and Jeanette Yacucci (and baby Jacob), Amy Zimmerman, and Alyson Gerwe had a great time at Kiwanis International Convention last month. They met so many amazing people and caught up with friends from around the world, as well as met many of the Kiwanis International staff. The workshops were fantastic and so pertinent to our everyday club operations. They came back with a lot of energy and new ideas to share.
At the Lunch and Learn this month, the four will share their experiences, the new ideas they brought back, and give a summary about what the Delegates voted on at the House of Delegates session. One exciting thing that happened was that Alan Penn from Ohio District was elected Kiwanis International Vice-President, which means that in two years he will be Kiwanis International President! For detailed information about the new Kiwanis International Officers and Amendments, please see the 2009 KICON website. At the KICON Website you can also see photos and videos from the event.
If you didn't get to go this year, next year's convention is in Vegas baby! Jay Leno is the featured entertainer for the event! If you've never been to a Kiwanis International Convention to experience the exhuberance of the event, the amazing Kiwanis members from around the world, or the energy you bring back with you, you need to go to this one! From October 1 - December 31 you can register online and save $55 off the pre-registration price.
Hope to see you in Vegas!

Did you know? Independence Day Should Have Been July 2 –July 2, 1776 is the day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. John Adams, in his writings, even noted that July 2 would be remembered in the annals of American history and would be marked with fireworks and celebrations. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn't actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August.
Line of Descent – Actress Reese Witherspoon is a direct descendant of John Witherspoon, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. John Witherspoon is pictured in a Barry Faulkner Mural, entitled "The Declaration of Independence," which illustrates 28 delegates to the Continental Congress of 1776. This newly restored mural is hanging in the Rotunda of the National Archives.
