Rising Costs for Nonprofits Overlooked in Healthcare Proposals
Nonprofit organizations are upset that Congress and the Obama
administration have not addressed their rising healthcare costs in the
healthcare reform proposals being floated on Capitol Hill, the New York Times reports. The main bill proposed in the House would award a tax credit to
small businesses that provide their employees with health insurance.
But because nonprofits do not pay income taxes, they would not benefit
from the credit.
Small Businesses Urged to Prepare for Disruptions From Swine Flu
The Department of Homeland Security urged small businesses Monday to
devise contingency plans allowing them to operate in the event a number
of their employees become infected with the H1N1 virus. With half of the nation's private-sector employees working at small
businesses, federal officials said they want the enterprises to take
precautions to prevent a disruption to the economy as the virus, also
known as swine flu, wends its way across the United States.
How Might We Increase Comfort as We Navigate Uncertainty?
Anyone who engages with new ideas must develop a
certain level of comfort with uncertainty. Once an organization takes a
step beyond what it has successfully done in the past—a new offering or
engaging a new group of people—uncertainty becomes an uneasy factor.
At a firm like IDEO, stepping into the unknown is a daily experience,
and those drawn to collaborating with us are compelled to break away
from the status quo, accepting the risks and discomfort that accompany
bold moves.
Behavior and Why It Deserves A Seat at the Goverment 2.0 Table
As I participated in the Government 2.0 events this past week, I couldn’t help but think about one word–behavior.
Over and over again, I observed that often we weren’t talking about a
tool, a Web site, some new blog, or a newer IT database. We were
talking about influencing and changing behavior. Almost every topic and issue discussed had behavior in common. Whether working to increase understanding across ethnicity, wanting people to be aware and address the peanut recall situation, take better care of the environment, to adopt new work processes, or to empower local citizens to help fix up their community–behavior
plays a key role. Whether it’s the behavior of the American public or
the behavior of those within an organization, work is being done not to
be cool, not to be different, but to influence and change behavior.
Making Ongoing Volunteering Valued and Visible
During
the amazing and celebratory opening session of the National Conference
on Volunteering and Service held this June in San Francisco, First Lady
Michelle Obama and at least four of the other famous speakers proposed
a future scenario: Wouldn’t it be
wonderful if, in time to come, when we meet someone and are making
conversation, one of the top five things we choose to talk about will
be: “…and where do you serve?”
Internet And Civic Engagement
OK,
summer is over, you’ve had a week to get back into work mode, and so
The Agitator is ready to offer some heavy lifting this week. We’ve been
saving up some important stuff on social media. First up is a new report from the Pew internet Project, called The Internet & Civic Engagement. As usual with Pew’s core research efforts, this one is packed with
useful data and insights on how social nets are playing an increasing
role in issue advocacy, discourse and donating.

Your RFP Process: The Groundwork for a Successful Relationship
For nonprofit executives, requesting proposals for professional services can be a bit like writing and monitoring an on-line dating profile. If you don't capture your organization's needs and values with succinctness and specificity, you may find yourself facing a choice between the wrong suitors. And when it comes to audit and tax needs, taking yourself out of the dating pool is not an option—you must ultimately choose one fish in the sea. When embarking on the RFP process, leaders should strive to get off on the right foot. |

[Podcast] (Board) Treasurer's Tutorial
The Treasurer is the very cornerstone in the structure of fiscal controls safeguarding the organization’s assets, and plays a critical role in helping nonprofit board directors understand the organization’s fiscal status. Pat Wyzbinski of the Nonprofit Management Fund talks with Maricruz Talavera-Pettis about the Treasurer’s responsibilities, as well as qualifications needed by those serving in this important position. Maricruz Talavera-Pettis is the Director of Finance and Compliance for Rosalie Manor Community and Family Services in Milwaukee and currently serves as the Treasurer for Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee.

Thinking Through Your Social Networking Tone
It
can be hard to work through the many and sometimes conflicting messages
we're hearing about the types of things nonprofits should post on
social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Just be yourself! Be
authentic! Be fun and witty! But don't be inane! Don't just post PR
message points! But be relevant! Align your use of social networks
around your organization's goals! But talk to what your audience is
interested in!

Ready to save money? It's not sexy, but it sure is smart!
UST provides nonprofits with a safe, cost-effective alternative to paying state unemployment taxes. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization you can opt out of the state’s tax-rated unemployment system and only pay the state dollar for dollar for your unemployment claims.
Two Key Benefits of UST Participation:
#1—Tax savings
By joining UST, your organization is guaranteed to pay 25% less in each of the first two years of participation than you would by paying state unemployment taxes. In the third and subsequent years of your participation, your contribution rates are determined annually by UST's actuary based on your organization's actual claim’s experience. These rates have historically saved members 25% to 60% long term. Nonprofits paying into the state unemployment tax system are paying in $2.20 for every $1.00 paid out in claims. UST members are paying in $1.10 for every $1.00 paid out in claims.
#2—Claim Savings
UST has partnered with TALX Employer Services to provide claims monitoring services. UST participants are assigned a dedicated TALX claims representative who will review all claims to detect any irregularities, improper charges, or inaccuracies. Last year, our vigilant claims monitoring resulted in national claims savings of over $35 million for UST member agencies.
