Management Tip

Topic: Business Card Etiquette

Etiquette Coach Syndi Seid of Etiquette in Minutes explains the emerging Asian-influenced International Business Protocol on how to give, receive, use, and keep business cards.

Bottom line: the Asians believe the business card is a representation of who you are, or an extension of yourself on paper.

Presenting a Business Card
  • Card in pristine condition
  • Card in right hand or both hands (highest form of respect), NEVER in left hand, which is an insult in Muslim and other countries

  Receiving a Business Card

  • Receive n same manner in which you presented yours.
  • Study the card to help you remember the person.
  • Ask a question or make a comment about the card
  • NEVER write on the face of the card in front of the card giver. (It's like writing on the person's face.) Make notes on a separate piece of paper or on the card when you are in private.
  • NEVER put the card away immediately OR put it in a back pocket.
  • Use a card case kept in upper part of your body or purse
