Nonprofit Sector News & Information
Donors Forum of Wisconsin Releases Premiere Wisconsin State of Philanthropy Report
The first-ever Wisconsin State of Giving Report released today by the Donors Forum of Wisconsin highlights the changes in the state's philanthropic landscape. At a time with unprecedented economic difficulties facing our state, this report provides critical benchmarks for grantmakers and information on giving in Wisconsin.

MapShot: Best ARRA Funding Resources by State
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is a sweeping effort to bolster the nation's economy, create or save jobs, and address some of our most challenging issues. The Foundation Center has collected the best resources on how nonprofits may be able to access stimulus package funding. This map connects you to information about funding and other opportunities in each state.

More on "Do Less with Less"
Every year Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco gives away turkeys at Christmas. This last year they gave away more than 5,000 turkeys, but they ran out. They did not ask staff to buy 20 turkeys each with their own money, nor did they feel it was their fault that they had "only" 5,000 turkeys. They had done their absolute best to get turkeys donated, and they gave out what they had. All of us can do the same: work as hard as we can to get support, and then accept that we may not be able to do more.

[video] Finding The Most Compelling Story
Are you telling your most compelling story? The effect of a compelling story on an audience member (donor, or potential donor), can have a huge impact on how they spend their money and use their time. This free video from Movie Mondays shares lessons learned to find a very compelling story. Even though this story revolves around a documentary film project, there are take-away ideas you can apply to your organization.

The New Socialism: Global Collectivist Society Is Coming Online
... Instead of gathering on collective farms, we gather in collective worlds. Instead of state factories, we have desktop factories connected to virtual co-ops. Instead of sharing drill bits, picks, and shovels, we share apps, scripts, and APIs. Instead of faceless politburos, we have faceless meritocracies, where the only thing that matters is getting things done. Instead of national production, we have peer production. Instead of government rations and subsidies, we have a bounty of free goods.

White House Officials Discuss Plans for Social-Innovation Office
The new White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation was created without much fanfare. In fact, even though it has been operating for several months, it has never been formally unveiled. But the office, set up to promote creative and effective ways to tackle social problems, is slowly starting to emerge as a public entity. The White House briefly outlined its goals in a statement last month to announce that the president was proposing $50-million in his 2010 budget for a social-innovation fund. And after months of working behind the scenes, White House officials have started to speak publicly about the office’s plans.

Finding Leaders for America's Nonprofits
... the recent report from Bridgespan Group, “Finding Leaders for America’s Nonprofits” ... explores the nature and dimensions of the evolving nonprofit leadership deficit through interviews with 433 U.S. leaders of nonprofits with $1 million or more in revenues, offering perspective on organizations’ hiring needs and plans, what they find most valuable in candidates for senior leadership positions, and more.
 Management Tip
Reviewing Structural Strategies Provides a Cushion Against Economic Downturns
Fieldstone Alliance, a WNA Preferred Partner, advises nonprofits to develop a broad spectrum of strategies to provide a cushion against economic downturns and to meet long-term mission goals. They suggest implementing strategies in at least three of four categories:
  • Increasing revenues
  • Decreasing expenses
  • Reviewing structural strategies (changing the mission of the organization, its internal structure, or its culture)
  • Participating in engagement strategies (collaboration is one type of engagement strategy)
Structural strategies, for example, involve organizational change. When major external change happens, it’s important to look internally to revisit and, if necessary, revise your mission and approach in order to serve the community in the best way possible.

To help you think about structural strategy options, Fieldstone Alliance consulting staff put together an easy-to-browse "real-time" resource chart with 22 ideas ranging from general to modifying your mission to modifying your organization's culture. In this chart you’ll find up-to-date information and examples of the three main types of structural strategies. This chart is similar to their cost-cutting and emergency funding charts.
