WNA Welcomes Mary Riordan, New Executive Director
The Wisconsin Nonprofits Association (WNA) welcomes Mary Riordan as its new Executive Director to move the organization into its next phase of growth. WNA, in its second year of operation, is the 41st state association of nonprofits in the country.
"I'm honored to have been selected to build on the strong foundation laid by our visionary founder JoAnn Stormer, our dedicated Board of Directors, and our Charter Member champions," said Mary. "I firmly believe that nonprofit organizations are the
lifeblood of our communities. WNA is here to serve you and I look forward to being
your representative on issues that impact us as well as providing all
of our members with quality programs, benefits, and services."
Mary has almost 15 years of management experience in associations, including as Vice President of Member Relations with the Alliance for Children and Families and as Director of Sales and Marketing and Director of Membership Services with the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association.

NEW Youtube Video Volunteers Program Connects Nonprofits and Volunteer Video Producers
Looking for help creating great video for your cause? Now nonprofits can post video volunteer requests on idealist.org, volunteer match, and serve.org. (Be sure to use the words "video volunteer" in your posting.).
Madoff Foundation Victims Lacked Adequate Board Size, Says Report
Of the
foundations that have been hardest hit by the Bernard Madoff financial
scheme, the majority of them lacked adequate board size or diverse
board leadership, factors that contributed to their becoming victims of
the investment scandal, says a new report.
Beyond Cash Reserves
Worrying
about cash shortfalls is, without a doubt, at the top of the list of
stressors for nonprofit directors and finance managers. In this
situation, everyone’s dream is to have a stash of cash - a cash reserve
account set aside to tap at a moment’s notice to solve the problem. I’m
reluctant to endorse a universal standard for reserves, but there are
“rules of thumb” and accepted practices calling for nonprofits to hold
reserves of three to six months of operating expenses. Well it turns
out that this “best practice” is a practice in theory only for many
nonprofits.
Competition or Collaboration?
Is competition a good thing? This morning I googled the phrase “collaboration is a good thing,” and found 2,650 results. Then I googled “competition is a good thing,” and came up with 80,700 results. For
every web-page that has acknowledged the hard-won value of
collaborative projects and processes, there are 30 web-pages that hale
the hallmark of North American enterprise, competition. ... This month, competition is being credited with helping more people to
serve. That’s right. One of those 80,700 results for “competition is a
good thing” is a quote from a fellow social innovator who I deeply
respect, Jonathan Greenblatt. His quote appeared in Suzanne Perry’s
recent article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, “An Obama-Inspired Volunteer-Recruitment Web Site Will Soon Debut.”

How will we create, use and maintain data in ways that are accurate, efficient, effective and appropriate to our cause? Much more important than the tools you use, like software, online platforms, gadgets, communication services, etc., are the ways you use them.
Accurate, trustworthy data starts with asking the right questions and answering those questions consistently. Asking a question in database land means creating a place, or field, for data to be entered. Answering means data entry, which, if done consistently allows you to include or exclude data for reports later.
Efficient data creation and maintenance means spending just as much time as you need and no more. Time spent planning well generally means less gridlock, wasted time and frustration later. Keeping data current in one accessible place, rather than scattered inconsistently in several systems and formats, requires discipline and may seem slower at any moment, but saves a huge amount of time and frustration later.
Effective use of data starts with focus on your goal and strategies to achieve that goal. Know how you expect the data that you generate and keep to help strengthen your strategies

Recognizing that nonprofits have integrated teleconferences, videoconferences, and webinars into their daily routine, The Goodman Center,
which helps nonprofit organizations improve their communications with
funders, stakeholders, and the public, surveyed the community to find
out the good, the bad, and the ugly about these events. The result: Dialing In, Logging On, Nodding Off: The True Costs of Teleconferences, Videoconferences and Webinars, a report that suggests the nonprofit community has a lot of not-so-good meetings, trainings, and conferences.
