Mary Beth McLain, Fifth Grade Teacher
Mary Beth McLain stepped in to lead our 4th grade class last year just after Christmas. A shining example of living life with zest and vigor, Mary Beth brought new liveliness and energy to the group. The children thrived on Mrs. McLain’s structure, imagination, and high standards. And she seemed to infect the kids with her own boundless curiosity. In fact, Mrs. McLain did so well with that 4th grade class that we promoted her along with them! Mary Beth is now happily ensconced in the 5th grade, surrounded by the most spirited, positive students in the world. Gosh, I wonder where they got it!
Dear Marymount Community,
It is with extreme enthusiasm that I return to Marymount this year. I was drawn here, attracted by the rich history, the professionalism of faculty and staff, and the true sense of family that is felt here. Prior to teaching, I had a career in Social Work...
Many Thanks and Warm Hugs…
Cal Ehler, father of Aidan Ehler who graduated in June and now attends Villanova Prep, once again donated the beautiful colorful shirts the children don every Thursday in honor of “Going Global.” Cal and his wife Terri also contributed last year’s rainbow of shirts to support “Many Hopes; Many Dreams; One Team,” along with the banners that hung in the Lower School and Middle School and small pennants that decorated the lampposts in the Middle School parking lot. Always incredibly generous, the Ehler family seldom let a week pass that they didn’t bring us baked goods, Starbucks cards, or just a thoughtful “atta boy.” They may be gone, but thanks to those fabulous shirts, they can never be forgotten. Thanks, Cal and Terri! You’re a model of quiet, thoughtful generosity.
And how can we ever thank Dax and Jen Holdren, parents of Kobe and Ellis, for bringing their friend and colleague Phil Dalhausser to campus last week. The thrill of meeting a gold medalist from the Bejing Olympics was absolutely intoxicating for our over-the-moon students. Noozhawk covered the event, click here for the full Noozhawk story and photos. The fact that Phil was born in Switzerland and raised in Germany made him a great example of our “Going Global” theme, as did the list of places where he’s appeared and performed. Dax, by the way, retired officially from pro beach volleyball on Sunday and Mayor Blum declared it “Dax Holdren Day” in Santa Barbara. But for us, the Holdren’s are family. With Jen Holdren now bringing her energy and positive, upbeat spirit to us as a member of the faculty, every day is Holdren Day at Marymount. Thanks, Dax and Jen. We’re so lucky that you’re part of the Marymount family!

The New Hot Lunch Gets the Thumbs Up!
And while we’re thanking people, let us not forget the health-conscious moms who have given us all a whole new perspective on school lunches! This year’s hot lunch program has been a series of gourmet delights of the highest order: healthy, wholesome and attractively presented lunches! Yvette Giller, Celia Hardy, and Lisa Johnston have done an outstanding job of researching and selecting our new caterer, Village Modern Foods. Village Modern shares our school’s strong belief in whole grains; fresh, locally-grown organic fruits and vegetables; and only a modicum of healthy fats. Desserts are fruit-based and low in sugars; the vegetables are colorful and cooked only to the point of still-crunchy perfection. But here’s the best part: the kids are raving about the new hot lunch. Our students can be tough food critics, and sometimes their youthful palettes crave more junk than health foods. But with the flavorful (and still economical) meals Yvette and Celia and Lisa have brought to them, Marymount’s children seem more than willing to indulge in our hot, new, happy, healthy lunch options. Bravo! Our compliments to the chefs!
