Oakland Cemetery Transcription is Complete… well almost

All the records for Oakland Cemetery have been transcribed and reside on the DGS Cemetery Database. The DGS Oakland Cemetery Team is now reviewing death notices and obituaries in local papers from 1892 to 1920 to discover announcements of burials not found in the cemetery records. The group is also making corrections, when source documentation is provided, to any record through the “comment” function on the database.  DGS members who have worked on this project are Suzan Younger, Barbara Ware, Carole Ruska, Alvin Harper, Sheri Degan, Tresa Gomez, and Carolyn Smith. Harold Williams, Oakland Cemetery sexton, and Robert Reynolds, Cemetery Association president, have been extremely helpful in this project. The database is online through the ingenuity of the DGS webmaster, Tony Hanson.

Archivist of the US David S. Ferriero
Announces Closure/Consolidations of National Archives Facilities

NARA currently maintains two facilities in Fort Worth: a combined records center and archives at John Burgess Drive, and a smaller “storefront” facility at Montgomery Plaza. The National Archives will permanently close the Montgomery Plaza facility in FY 2016. All employees at the Montgomery Plaza location will move to John Burgess or telework locations. No original records are stored at Montgomery Plaza, and researchers will have continued access to archival records through the research room at John Burgess Drive.

NOTE: Meg Hacker, Director of Archives at the Ft. Worth facility, is presenting the program at our April General Meeting.  While her topic is “NARA’s Online Public Access, Live Demo”, she will no doubt have further information about the effects of the consolidation on the community.
