FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JIM TOY COMMUNITY CENTER CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE RELEASED

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Today, the Jim Toy Community Center, a 501 c(3)  non-profit advocacy resource for LGBTQA residents of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and greater Washtenaw county is announcing the results of its first municipal candidate questionnaire for the 2014 primary elections.

Drafted by members of the Jim Toy Community Center Public Policy committee, the questionnaire was designed to gauge and elicit candidates’ commitments to LGBTQ issues and equality. Every candidate filed with the Washtenaw County Clerk's office was delivered a questionnaire, paired with instructions and disclosure information.

The survey asked candidates to describe their level of personal involvement with the LGBT community

and also included statements where candidates could agree or disagree. The topic areas included same-sex marriage, domestic health benefits, and same-sex adoption. Candidates were able to provide an open-ended response to each question or statement.

Candidates’ responses were then coded and rated on a five point scale, which is as follows: 1) Shows no support for LGBT equality, 2) Shows some, but limited understanding and support for LGBT equality, 3) Shows moderate support and understanding of LGBT equality and issues, 4) Shows full support for LGBT equality and understanding of issues, and 5) Shows full support for LGBT equality, understands the community's issues, and has strived to be an advocate/ally in all facets of life.

We received responses from 25 candidates, whose ratings are indicated below. Please be advised that as a 501c(3) nonprofit, the Jim Toy Community Center does not give out endorsements. Rather, we created a ratings system to show our community which elected officials, and candidates running for office, are supportive of issues important to the LGBT community.
