Jonah's Anger at the LORD's Compassion
[ Jonah 4:1-11]
After a short break to observe Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, we return to the story of Jonah… When we last left the reluctant prophet, he was back on the right track, following rather than running away from God’s call. He had delivered the word of the LORD to the people of Nineveh—a word of judgment that blossomed into a word of grace. The people repented of their evil ways and turned to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The power of the Gospel in action—seemingly the perfect end to the story of Jonah. Surprisingly, there’s more to the story. Together we have one more chapter to read. God has relented. The prayers of the Ninevites have been answered but Jonah isn’t delivering the message. He isn’t falling down and praising the LORD for the redemption of Nineveh. Jonah isn’t prepared to ride off into the sunset just yet. Jonah’s angry. Furious. He is burning with rage—but not against the people of Nineveh. The target of his meltdown is the Almighty himself. Why in the world is Jonah mad at the LORD? What could possibly be his beef after tens of thousands have experienced and embraced the grace of God? And is this the end of the line for Jonah—is it okay to be angry with God? I invite you this Sunday to hear the answer to these questions. Together let us dive into one of the biggest showdowns in Scripture. Man against God. Messenger in tension with the Message. Prophet on strike. Jonah and the case against the LORD. Get ready for a honest conversation and some very revealing answers. Along the way, we might exorcise some of our own baggage with God. Eavesdropping on this argument might give us a different perspective on our perceptions of how God chooses to work in the world. And if you’re a member who normally attends the 2nd service please remember to come a little earlier—9:45am for our annual congregational meeting. Meet some new members. Vote on your Church Council. Approve the annual budget. Listen. Learn. Lend your voice as well as your vote. An all church BBQ will follow immediately after the 10:30am service. Childcare will be provided. Spend an extra hour having lunch with us and learning where we are going in the midst of our denominational concerns. Hear the vision for Grace in 2010-2011 as we look back and celebrate the past year. Your presence is vital. I hope you’ll join us! CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT: Grace Kitchen, part 2
The drop in price of granite was an answer to prayer for phase II of the kitchen remodel. Rachel and Terry Zippwald landed a deal that no one would refuse. With the motivation to uphold the congregation’s wishes to remodel the kitchen, phase II of the project was under way. With the vision, plan and approval of the Council and Campus Improvement Team, Janie Andrich, staff and volunteers met with contractors, acquired bids, selected paint and tile to match the granite and the project was off and running. A team of volunteers, including Crystal Orr, Terry Zippwald and Ken Beaulieu helped unload the kitchen drawers and cupboards. The construction interrupted the regular routine of many of the ministries, but the patience and extra effort from those who were affected deserves an applause. After a long week of work, the kitchen was back in order and you could once again smell the aroma of the tasty meals that come out of it. Take a look at the beautiful upgrade this Sunday as you enjoy the BBQ in Hope Hall where you’ll hear part II of the Congregational Meeting and more about the facility improvements.
