JonahContinued 3Sitting in Judgment
Isn't Comfortable

[Jonah 4:1-11]

“Is it good for you to be angry?”

That’s the word that the LORD gives in response to Jonah’s tirade.

Jonah, you’ll recall, is fuming about God’s compassion towards Nineveh. Jonah wanted God to bring down the thunder. That’s the message that Jonah believed he was delivering as a prophet of the LORD. But God’s word through Jonah wasn’t so black and white. Within the announcement of judgment was also the promise of grace.

For Jonah, it’s all too much. He derides the LORD for being so gracious. He chides the Almighty for going soft. Where others perceive God’s character as a source of faith and hope, Jonah makes such attributes the basis of his indictment—as the cause for doubt and cynicism.

The proverbial line has to drawn somewhere. Mercy is all well and good but sometimes you have to bring down the hammer in order to appreciate its abeyance. Called to account by this line of argument, the LORD turns the accusation back on the accuser.

“Is it good for you to be angry?”

This question is left hanging in the air. Jonah offers no response—at least none that is officially recorded. The closest we get to an answer is received through Jonah’s next action. Without saying a word to God or to the Ninevites, he packs his bags and leaves the city.

I invite you this Sunday to see where Jonah went and to ponder why he went there. But may we also realize that while Jonah is on the run again, God still remains one step ahead of him. Together we will observe both the Lord’s long-suffering patience and persistence. God will provide an important object lesson for Jonah—a living parable—that is intended to move him closer to the answer to God’s question—the answer that he refuses to see, that he refuses to put into words.

Grace and peace to you!

Pastor Chris
