Pastor Chris' ELCA Update

chrisMy fellow brothers and sisters in Christ,

A month ago at our annual congregational meeting and barbeque I presented the vision for Grace for the upcoming year. I strongly encourage every member and friend of Grace to take the time to listen to that message.  Part of this presentation included outlining our next steps as part of the ELCA. What I shared that afternoon was recorded. In addition to the audio file, here is a brief summary of my presentation regarding our next steps with the ELCA.

Summer Reading 2010

summerreading 2
If you'd like to understand the future vision for Grace as well as be a part of the ongoing conversation, please add these three books to your summer reading list. Each of these books addresses a crucial dimension of the challenge that lies before us.

"Who Stole My Church?" by Gordon MacDonald offers insight into what it means to be a multi-generational church in a changing world. If you're wrestling with some of the recent changes made at Grace--this is a MUST read!

"The Hole in Our Gospel" by Richard Stearns broadens and challenges our typical understanding of what it means to share the Gospel in word and deed both in our community and across the globe. Whether you're satisfied, dissatisfied or indifferent about efforts in missions and evangelism, this book is a blueprint of how things must and will change at Grace.

"UnChristian" by David Kinniman and Gabe Lyons puts a face and a story on the two generations that we most need to reach but that are also the most hostile and resistant not to Jesus or to faith but to the church. If every church is truly one generation away from extinction, we need to understand and respond to the perceptions and criticisms of those who will be coming after us. Is it possible that as the church we have taken our eyes off Jesus and that is why the upcoming generations cannot perceive Christ in the church? I challenge each of you to answer this question after reading this book!

Read these books. Listen to our recent discussions online. Talk to your family, friends and neighbors about them. Be informed. These books will be the basis of further small group conversations that we will be having at Grace.

Visit our SUMMER READING 2010 page for more info and to hear MP3 audio from past book discussions.

VBS 5VBS is July 12-16, 2010.

This summer, bring your kids and their friends to SonQuest Rainforest - an experience of discovery they will never forget! Some of the things you will learn include the 9 ways to avoid foreclosure, foreclosure timelines, and current available government programs. Ways To Pray For Others At Grace

prayer
God responds to prayer with power and love, often going beyond what has been asked or even hoped.  He invites us to intercede and pray for others.

ONLINE PRAYER

Email Susie if you wish to receive the daily email prayer chain that includes requests from within Grace community.  You may also submit prayer requests online and they will be included in our daily Prayer Chain that is emailed to our prayer warriors daily.

Many families with loved ones in critical care are now using websites to keep family and friends informed. A current Grace member, John Knox, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Read their blog updates and join in the prayers for his healing.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  1 JOHN 5:15

Dealing With Grief?  There Is Hope.

GriefShare
Pastor Howell Foster leads a grief group at Grace that is a safe place for grieving people.  Just last week a man showed up whose wife died less than a month ago and left him with 4 teenagers.  Others lost loved ones to illness.  God is moving in our midst and bringing healing.  Two weeks ago we baptized a member of our group and she said "it was the most wonderful day of my life."  In the last 5 years more than 100 people have walked through grief through the support of this group.

The grief group will be meeting again on Thursdays beginning in September.

Need someone to talk to before then?  Contact Pastor Howell [714-962-1569 or hfoster001@socal.rr.com] or follow his online grief blog.
