Girls Rock! Chicago’s August Camp Needs Volunteers!

Everyone at GR!C is so excited for our second camp of 2010, which will run August 2nd-8th. But we need your help! We are still searching for volunteers, and whether you can commit to the whole week or just a few hours, you can help ensure that every camper has the best week of her life. We’re still seeking:
  • Counselors—musical experience not required (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm; Sat showcase & Sun recording)
  • Instrument teachers—guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, DJ (Mon-Fri, 10:30am-12:30pm)
  • Band coaches (Mon-Fri, 2:30-4:30pm; Sat showcase & Sun recording)
  • Women to lead workshops on music- or band-related topics like songwriting, zine making, performing, or whatever else you can dream up
  • Bands with female members to perform Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 4:30-5:00pm

For more info on camp week positions and to sign up to volunteer, visit our website.

Other Ways You Can Help Girls Rock! Chicago

Gear Donations/Loans

We are also seeking gear donations for August camp. Have an old bass you don’t use anymore? An amp you could part with for the week? GR!C will put your instruments, microphones, cables, whatever you’ve got to good use, whether you want to donate it for good or loan it for the week. We are especially in need of DJ equipment.

Email gear@girlsrockchicago.org if you would like to donate gear or loan instruments for camp week.

Roadies

If you are unable to join Girls Rock! for the whole week but still want to help out, a roadie position is ideal for you. Help us move gear into and out of our camp site, or get a behind-the-scenes view of the rock ‘n’ roll life by helping us set up for the End-of-Camp Extravaganza at Metro. Roadies (men welcome!) are needed for the following times:

Sunday August 1st: 11am-8pm
Friday August 6th: 4:30pm - 8pm
Saturday August 7th: 8:30am-12pm

Email laura@girlsrockchicago.org if you want to help.

Food Donations

Helping 80 girls become rock stars is hard work, and it sure makes us hungry. We’re looking for donations of healthy lunches and snacks from restaurants and generous individuals. Your contribution will help feed campers and volunteers and is even tax deductible.

Contact melissa@girlsrockchicago.org for more information.

Thank You for Your Support

GR!C would like to thank everyone who helped make our June camp a success. To all of our volunteers, we greatly appreciate your hard work and long hours sweltering away in those steamy classrooms. And a big thank you to all of the moms and restaurants who donated food for our hungry campers and volunteers: Susan Wilson, Sara Ross, LaShon Lewis, New York City Bagel Deli, Noodles & Company, Handlebar, Lucia's, Whole Foods, Chipotle, Starbucks, and Francesca's Forno. Extra special thanks go out to Josephinum Academy for use of their facilities, Metro for hosting the End-of-Camp Extravaganza, and Engine Studios for allowing the bands to record their songs. And of course, thanks to all of our campers and their families and anyone who came to see the girls rock out at the End-of-Camp Extravaganza.

Ladies Rock Camp Photos Now on Flickr

Back in May, a bunch of rad grown-up ladies got their own taste of the Girls Rock! experience with our first Ladies Rock camp. We’ve added an amazing set of photos that Amanda Barbato took during camp to our Flickr pool.
Amanda’s pics are sure to inspire you to take up an instrument yourself, so contact LRC@girlsrockchicago.org if you’re interested in attending our next Ladies Rock camp. You’ll have a great time, plus tuition helps fund Girls Rock! camps so we never have to turn away girls due to financial need.
