This has been a most exciting two weeks for Environmental Charter High School.
As you may know, out of over 1,000 schools, the White House and Department of Education picked ECHS as one of 6 national finalists in a competition for the President to speak at their 2010 graduation.
While we’re sorry we were not the winner, we are incredibly inspired that that we made it to the top six in this competition. This, and seeing the nation rally around education, are the best reminders of the important work we do every day at ECHS.
The President and Secretary of Education commended ECHS as a finalist for its exemplary educational work. This week Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, said the White House will send a cabinet member to our commencement!
More than 170,000 people weighed in on the six finalists in the White
House Race to the Top Commencement Challenge. The race was neck and
neck with all of the schools finishing within half a point of one
another!
Newscasters, celebrities, and civic leaders visited our campus, spoke out on our behalf, interviewed our students, and shared our vote campaign with their audiences.
To be recognized by the President and be included alongside six other extraordinary schools for this honor is more than we ever expected. Student Jordan Howard, who submitted ECHS' application in February with a group of classmates, said quite aptly "We understand now that this wasn't about our school, it's about education and teaching the world what environmental education is all about."
It could not have been done without the support of the community over the past decade and all who have helped ECHS achieve its goals.
We thank everyone in Los Angeles, in California, across the country, and around world who took a few minutes to see our video, vote, and learn more about us. Thank you again for your support!
