    Sports takes the spotlight at Business Forum
Tulane Business ForumFrom the NBA All-Star Game and the BCS College Football Championship to the NCAA Men’s Final Four and the Super Bowl, New Orleans has in the last few years reemerged as one of the nation’s leading destinations for major sporting events. At this year’s Tulane Business Forum, which took place on Friday (Sept. 28) at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, a panel of local sports officials said that impressive post-Katrina run isn’t an accident.

    Join Freeman for Homecoming 2012 
Chef Brian LandryTulane University celebrates Homecoming 2012 next month, and as part of that celebration, the Freeman School is sponsoring a number of special events for business alumni. On Friday, Nov. 2, Freeman will host an Open House, Tour and Q&A with Dean Ira Solomon from 4 – 5 p.m. in Goldring/ Woldenberg Hall II. Then, on Saturday, Nov. 3, join us for tailgating at the Freeman School tent in Champions Square at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome prior to the Tulane-Rice football game. In the last few years, it’s become a Freeman tradition to invite some of the top chefs in New Orleans to provide food for our tailgating party, and this year is no exception.     Students use biz skills to support injured player
Brad GirsonWithin hours of learning that Tulane football player Devon Walker had suffered a devastating spinal injury in the Sept. 8 game against Tulsa, Brad Girson (BSM ’13) and Jesse Schwartz (LA ’13) started brainstorming. “We were sitting in our living room watching the game live, and we saw the injury happen,” recalls Schwartz. “We didn’t know the extent of the injury at the time, but when we found out, we just thought, ‘What can we do?’”

    Blood drive for Sandy Kaynor
Sandy KaynorSandy Kaynor (MBA ’07), a special counsel at the law firm of Jones Walker and a graduate of the Freeman School’s Executive MBA program, was shot and critically injured during a carjacking in front of his home in New Orleans earlier this month. On Monday, Oct. 8, Jones Walker sponsored a blood drive for Kaynor, but friends and colleagues can still donate blood on Kaynor’s behalf by contacting the Blood Center. Click the link to find out the location of your nearest donation center. Whether or not you are able to donate blood, please keep Sandy in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from this life-threatening injury. 
   
    Alum makes Esquire Best New Restaurants list
SouBouCongratulation to Ti Martin (MBA ’84), whose “spirited restaurant” SouBou was just named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Esquire. The restaurant, which opened in July in the French Quarter space formerly occupied by Bacco, earned accolades from Esquire restaurant critic John Mariani for its sophisticated take on bar food. SouBou is part of the Brennan Family of Restaurants, which also includes Commander’s Palace, Cafe Adelaide and Brennan’s of Houston.  

   
    Freeman Days heads to Chicago
Field MuseumAttention Freeman alumni in the Chicago area: This year’s Freeman Days Chicago Alumni Networking Reception is Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Field Museum. This annual event serves as both a mini-reunion for Chicago-area alums and a chance to meet some of the outstanding students visiting Chicago for job interviews and corporate information sessions.     Audit policy expert Cindy Fornelli visits Tulane
Cindy FornelliCindy Fornelli, executive director of the Center for Audit Quality (CAQ), discussed the state of financial reporting, public company auditing and the role of the CAQ in a special lecture at the Freeman School on Sept. 17. Fornelli is one of the nation’s leaders in the area of public company auditing policy. As executive director of the Center for Audit Quality, Fornelli heads an organization dedicated to enhancing investor confidence and public trust in the global capital markets by fostering high-quality performance by public company auditors. The CAQ also collaborates with other stakeholders to advance the discussion of critical issues and advocates policies and standards that promote public company auditors’ objectivity and responsiveness to market conditions.
