| CIS of Kansas Receives Expanded AmeriCorps VISTA Continuation Grant
|
|
The Communities In
Schools of Kansas AmeriCorps VISTA project is expanding numerically and
geographically. CIS of Kansas has been awarded six more AmeriCorps VISTA
members this year, including two VISTA members funded by the Recovery Act. CIS
of Kansas can now place members in two new areas, Ottawa and Rice County.
The state office will house four VISTA members who are
responsible for capacity building for CIS, conducting fundraising, marketing,
event planning and partnership building. The members do not help with typical
volunteer work but rather with volunteer recruitment, program development and
grant writing.
Position
descriptions are available on the Communities In Schools website here. To apply, go to www.americorps.gov/vista,
search for positions in Kansas, and create and submit an application for the
desired position.

| The Big Guy Pays a Visit |
|
Dan Cardinali, CIS
national president, visited the CIS of Kansas Board meeting in March. Joining the Board of Directors and local affiliate
executive directors, Cardinali discussed how CIS has a major role in public
education improvement and the benefit the organization has on the nation's
youth. A recent evaluation concluded that CIS is the only organization that
helps to decrease the dropout rates and increase graduation rates in America.
"The Kansas state office is strong. It has a strong board
and strong locals with measurable outcomes," added Cardinali.
Three local executive directors, Steve Goceljak, Sarah
Nagel and Becky Nevergold, attended the Board meeting, along with Alice Banks,
CIS of KCK/Wyandotte County board president.

| UKanTeach Connects with CIS |
|
UKanTeach provides an
alternate way to earn a teaching certificate in math or science for education
majors at the University of Kansas. Part of the program requires participation
in extracurricular professional development. The benefits of UKanTeach are that
Kansas gains qualified teachers, it provides job security for education majors,
and the internships are mutually beneficial to UKanTeach students and
the region's community organizations like CIS.
Kim
Cady is the UKanTeach intern for CIS this year. She works 12 to 15 hours a week on various
tasks that increase
the scope of her experiences in education.
"Because of my
activities here, I am more confident and competent in more than just a
classroom setting. I have improved my office skills dramatically, and I am
better equipped to deal with future principals, school boards, and parents,"
Cady said. "Even more importantly," she
added, "I have a better idea of the huge challenges that many students face
before they ever get into the classroom."
